Well With Denver and Buffalo out the only other 0-4 team is Minny,
I dont think theyll make it :-)

The NFC is a tough call, Id love to predict someone other then
Dallas/SF but even a healthy Minny team couldnt beat either of them,
plus I dont think its possible for Minny to play SF in rnd 2 otherwise
I could pray that they both lost :-) (SF and Dallas that is).

I hate to say it (Type it) but no one other then SF will represent the
    NFC This year...

In the AFC, My heart wants the Pats but lets WAKE UP and smell the
coffee, they may be the best team in the AFC right now (7 straight
wins) but there still too young, and our beloved Bledsoe will throw
1 too many INT's... So I'll go with (I just cant decide between SD
and Miami..) oh hell we'll go with Marino...

Here are the game stats so that we can all see exactly how San Francisco
beat San Diego.

The Niners definitely jumped out early on the Chargers. If'n that happens
in the Super Bowl, they'll be in some serious trouble.

San Francisco 38, San Diego 15

202.44Charger Could WinBSS::G_MCINTOSHTouch Not the Cat, Bot the GloveThu Jan 19 1995 02:469

The Chargers can win this game flat out IF they can run the ball, have
some long time-consuming touchdown drives and make SF work for all
their points. I'm not saying it will happen, in fact I give my
Chargers only a 35% chance of winning, but the Niners aren't invicible.
They did lose a few games this year, and it could happen again.

202.45PTOSS1::JACOBRWhen's training camp start???Thu Jan 19 1995 02:5712
The key to beating the 49ers, IMHO, is to disrupt the rythym of their
offense. Their offense is timing oriented, Young throws a lot of
timing passes, and if you can knock the receivers out of their routes,
and get enough pressure on Young, QUICKLY, while protecting yerself
from his scrambling, they can be beat, but it's not likely on the 29th
    of this month.

I would, however, If I was a bettign man, take the Chargers and the
    pernts.

Teams have tried to bump Rice early, and that's when he's had his big
games. He's stronger than he looks, and if you don't knock him flat
every time (he almost always the 1st or 2nd option on every pass),
    you've given up a TD.

If I were S.D.'s defensive coordinator (Arnsbarger?), I'd double
the wide receivers (chuck them at the line) and let Junior cover
Jones one on one (after the defensive ends have sufficiently held
him up of course). Make S.F. beat them with the run...

Of course, that's why I work at DEC. :^)

Let's see.

Take 2 defenders, cover Rice; take 2 defenders, cover Taylor; Seau
isolated on Brent Jones; that leaves 6 people to do the rest.

Say you rush 4 of 'em, that leaves 2. Those 2 now have to cover any and
all plays, running and passing, that involves Young, Watters and Floyd.

I'd say that might be a prescription for keeping the score down a bit but
it would also be a slow methodical death march.

That's the problem for teams playing San Fran and trying to matching up.

What Arnsbarger is going to do is almost the opposite. He'll play a soft
zone almost beggin Young to set some Super Bowl records. About the
onliest thing that will stop him will be when they're up 4 TDs and Elvis
comes in.

TTom

If they do that. Young will have 60+ yards rushing, Watters will
have 150+ Yards, and Floyd will have 3 or 4 TD's

I already feel bad for San Diego. They will lose by at least 3 TD's
    if not more.

I don't think anyone believes SD can win, IF they don't do what
the Giants did against the Bills. San Diego has to control the ball
with the rush. Natrone Means and the 49'ers line might be able to
do it. If they can hold the ball 35 minutes, they have a chance.
202.52HELIX::MAIEWSKIFri Jan 20 1995 12:169
Of course almost no one believed the Jets could beat the Colts in Super Bowl
III and the Chargers have been surprising people lately but it still seems
very unlikely that they will win.

I wonder why it is that football, more than any other sport, seems to get
these really one sided matchups in the final championship? I don't remember
that being a problem back in the old NFL Championship game days.

The blowout to Philly was simply a case of SF pulling a no-show.

The way they played, you coulda run on 'em.

The real loss to consider is their bad showing at the Chiefs. Or course,
KC had Montana so the comparison might not be all that helpful.

How on earth can Ross be a much better coach than Siefert? Siefert

the same could be said about Switzer. Siefert has had to work through
two different offensive coordinators and still keep the offense at
the top. He has at least three rookies on defense. The offensive
line has changed the backfield has completely changed in the last

Seifert is on his way to his 2nd Super Bowl victory, with a different
team and different personnel from the first one, in a league where
regardless of what you're given to work with there are no guarantees
and ample opportunity to screw up. Seifert has gotten the job done
long after Bill Walsh has gone. If you're going to give the credit

The one that must drive fans nuts is that they don't get to see their
Quarterback play as much because sometimes he runs the kickoff back for a
touchdown.

Ditto when he intercepts a pass then runs that in instead of getting tackled.

I don't know how fans could be expected to put up with that stuff.

Well, I'm almost middle-aged, and I'm definitely a slow white guy.

Neon Deion does some things VERY well, and other things not so well.
He's fast -- speed overcomes other technical flaws. Not being speedy
I know that well.

He doesn't hit or tackle. I think it is laughable that he was defensive
player of the year. I'd take Woodson as an all around player first.

BUT, with the exception of his histrionics, I *enjoy* watching him play....

As to Bart Oates' haid, they just make a helmet big enough. He doesn't
have the biggest haid in football though -- that was one of the Washington
hogs from back in the 80s. One of the tackles. I remember John Madden
saying the guy had a "big ol' pumpkin haid!"

funny Tommy but I don't recall anybody saying the guy couldn't play.
Just that they can't stand his BS. He gets his dues as a player who
can cover from me but that's it. So much of his claim to fame though
is built on hype because he plays two sports and the flashiness he
eludes. I think Terry McDainels is every bit as good as a cover-man
but I serioulsy doubt that if Terry played for the Niners this year
that he would have won Defensive Player of the year despite the fact
that he hits and probably plays better zone defense that Dieon.

The way I see it despite the fact that his teammates say he's a good
guy and teammate is that Dieon is only in for Dieon. If he really cared
about his teammates he'd drop one sport for the other and certainly he'd
concentrate on hitting and playing better zone defensive if football was
 his sport of choice.....

The reasons Deion is great (and BETTER than Woodson) are:

1- opposing offenses fear throwing his way...he DOES take a
	   WR out of the gameplan

2- he rarely (if ever) gets beat deep

and most importantly

3- he turns interceptions into TOUCHDOWNS...half of his INTs

To me, it doesn't make a difference if someone is white or black. Personally,
I've never been into folks who have to shoot off their mouth about how
great they are. That's just me.

When I was in college, I had the opportunity to play in the wind ensemble
or orchestra while some pretty good guest soloists came to play with us.
Some were very brash prima donnas. Others were very quite, and let their
playing speak for them. I always tended to prefer the second kind I guess.

So, I'm not saying Ali wasn't a great boxer (he was) nor Deion a great
DB. I guess I'm saying that I just don't like the mouth that goes along
with it.

But, again, that's just me.....

Hey Tommy Brydie, judging by the defensive reaction in here I guess
you hit the nail right on the head with the Sanders comments. But I do
disagree with one thing. Jordan and Bird were not all that different.
Somebody once told me that the only difference between Bird and Jordan was
that they both did the same things, just Larry did it three inches off the
ground and Michael did it three feet off the ground. Larry certainly was
no shrinking violet when it came to brashness, it's just that it was called
confidence in him where it might be called cocky in a black athlete.

JAke, how can you not like Deion, but put up with Tim McKyer. I've
seen both of them play for SF, and the difference is that Deion backs
up what he says, and doesn't trash talk nearly as much as McKyer. I'd
guess that if Deion was a Steeler, he'd be OK in your book.

RE Woodson vs. Deion- Early in the season, Woodson got burned a few
times when he was on single coverage. The Steelers had to rethink the
strategy and you didn't see Woodson man-to-man on the big receivers in
the league, like you do with Deion. Would Woodson have shut down
Harper and let the Steelers double Irvin, the way Deion did?

Even before he announced his conversion to Islam after winning the
title, Ali was controversial. He was brash and loud and boastful
(and brilliantly funny, if you didn't find him offensive). He
recited self-composed poetry to the press, which usually included
a prediction of the round in which he would knock his opponent out.
An awful lot of whites detested him, because in those days athletes
were supposed to be humble about their accomplishments and say "Aw
shucks" a lot. White athletes who deviated from this norm were
labelled "flakes", and more or less tolerated. Ali was not tolerated,
by many, and in most of his pretitle fights, more of the crowd was
against him than for him. No question that a black athlete was
given less leeway than a white one; if Ali had been white, people
would have chuckled and shaken their heads.

Then he won the title, announced his conversion, and refused to be
drafted into the Army. By now half the country thought he was a
hero and the other half thought he was a traitor. Race was not the
issue at this point, except of course that his religion understood
itself as the faith of the blacks.

After he won his case before the Supreme Court and returned to boxing
after more than three years away, he was on a collision course with
Joe Frazier. When they met in the first contest between undefeated
HW champions, Frazier was the champion of the patriotic set; it was
very much a political issue.

But times changed. The war ended, Malcolm X was murdered, Ali
himself got sick of Muslims telling him he shouldn't have Angelo
Dundee in his corner. Ali's fights were no longer political issues
by the time he took the title back from George Foreman, and he won
grudging respect from many detractors by his show of courage in the
brutally punishing third fight with Frazier.

Finally, in retirement, he achieved in America the status of icon
that he had long since had in the rest of the world.

If anyone's interested on more about this remarkable man, Thomas
Hauser's oral biography is a pretty good piece of work.

Yes, but also keep in mind the fact that they tend to be behind the
scenes guys. You don't see a lot of reporters running up to Oates
after the game saying "Bart, that was some great snapping out there today".

By the very nature of the position, you DON'T want to hear your name
called.

So, I identify with them because they let their playing speak for them,
not necessarily because they're white. I've also kept an eye on Steve
Wallace and Jackie Slater (talk about STUD-dom, all those years in the
NFL playing tackle)......

I identify more with the quietness of the position than the color necessarily.

But I'll be honest as I say with tongue in cheek:

Woodson's an outstanding cornerback, but coverage isn't the main
reason why; he's not the coverage corner that Deion is, and QB's aren't
going to avoid their WR's on his side just because he lines up over
there against him. Deion is more likely to take away a receiver
so the QB won't even consider him.

On the other hand, Woodson is much better than Deion in hard hitting
and tackling, and will be involved in plays other than coverage.

Deion is faster, but both can be good return guys when used.

First off, yep, I played line, Claybone, but I could pancake people pretty
well....

Second off, I watched the game and what a helluva game it was. Young and
Rice were unconscious together, Watters was right on. The San Fran line
played extremely well until later in the game.

Neon Deion actually made a tackle, made an inty late, but I was more impressed
about the footage of him during the pre-game, where he talked about growing up
and how he doesn't drink or smoke.

Stubblefield and Bryant Young, are studs.

Jerry Markbreit kept his crew notably "out of it", and I was pleased he
was officiating. You don't often see a lot of controversy in a game he
does.
