    You have to like the way they play so well without all the high priced
    talent like the Blue Jays have.

    The Expos are like the Pirates were in the early 90's. Once that talent
    reaches the free agent status - look out. From my understanding,
    Montreal is considered a small market for baseball without deep
    pockets.  Enjoy it now.

    Re .2

    One significant difference - Montreal hasn't traded away all its top
    minor league talent. Sure, Walker and Grissom will walk away soon -
    but White, Pride, Floyd, and others will be fine replacements.
    The key will be be for Montreal to continue drafting well.

> The key will be be for Montreal to continue drafting well.

This is the key for all of the small market teams. Under current rules,
they have the player for 6 years. Use him, like Pitts did with Bonds
and Bonilla, and then replace him with more young talent. It's far
cheaper to invest in scouts and coaches.
173.5Its the fans faultPOLAR::HAGLEYThu Jul 21 1994 21:263
    If only the Montreal fans would come to see the team play they would
    be able to pay the big salaries.They must have the worst fans in
    baseball.
173.6There's a history hereVAOP28::RiceIt can't happen hereThu Jul 21 1994 21:328
Montreal fans are still recovering from the dismantling of
the great Carter/Raines teams a few years back (like ten?).
Support used to be great, but management got greedy and now
they'll have to be patient. If the 'Spos keep winning the
crowds should pick up in August.

    Keeping the young talent in the farm system is easier said than done.
    As the season draws near to close and the Expos are still contending
    and need that "extra" 1 or 2 veterans to push them over the top - guess
    what goes - the farm prospects.

    The Pirates did it when they gave the Expos Alou for LHP Zane Smith and
    the Red Sox did it when they gave up Bagewell for a pitcher.

    Yes, that happens all the time - but there's a smart way to do it
    as well as a dumb one.

    The smart one, as the Blue Jays have demonstrated, it to keep the
    best (Delgado, Gonzalez), while trading the lesser talents (Hill,
    Whiten, Boucher, Thompson, Kent, Bell). Sure, you let some
    good players go that way, but you also trade some who will never
    really pan out while keeping the gems.

    The dumb way to go about things, using the Expos as an example,
    would be to trade White and Floyd and White so that they can hold
    on to Pride and the like...

> The Pirates did it when they gave the Expos Alou for LHP Zane Smith and

    A reasonable trade, at least in part; Alou, this career year aside,
    has been an OK outfielder, but no star. If I were a pirates fan,
    I'd be more upset about including Greene in the deal.

> the Red Sox did it when they gave up Bagewell for a pitcher.

    I'm not going to comment again on this one... B^)

  It would be a major break for the Expos if there were a strike now. History
shows that experience pays off during the stretch and the Braves are the
guys that have been here before.

  The Expos best chance of winning their division this year is a strike.

173.33We want no strike!!!!!!!!POLAR::HAGLEYFri Aug 05 1994 20:009
    Its true the Expos don't have a lot experience in pennant drives,but
    what a team lacks in experience can possibly made up for with lots of
    enthusiasm. Good coaching and lots of fun and enthusiasm have gotten
    them this far. They also have one of or even the best bullpen in the
    national league with Rojas the set up man and Wetteland the closer.
    It hasn't got them in first place in the league for nothing, Sir.

                         Marc

173.34HELIX::MAIEWSKIFri Aug 05 1994 20:1912
  I don't doubt that they are a good team but I don't think that beating the
Braves in a full season is a lock.

  If the season ends next Thursday they have a very good chance of winning the
division since they are currently a few games up however if they have to play
out the remainder of the season, a 2-3 game lead over a team like the Braves
suddenly looks pretty slim.

  All I'm saying is that based on probabilities alone, the strike works in
favor of the Expos, not against them.

  George
173.35Whats up?BSS::MENDEZFri Aug 05 1994 20:286

173.37MSE1::FRANCUSMets in '94Fri Aug 05 1994 20:516
    If the Braves held true to form than a strike certainly hurts them. The
    last 3 yers they have been awesome in August and September. Braves
    would still likely be the wildcard team when the strike stops play.

    The Crazy Met

173.38HELIX::MAIEWSKIFri Aug 05 1994 20:5110
  In terms of winning the division sure. If you are 3 games down with 6 games
to go that's worse than being 3 games down with 50 games to go (or what ever
they've got left), especially if you have a strong team like the Braves.

  I've lost track of what they did over the last couple days but if the Expos
are up by 3 games now with 6 to go that would make their magic number for
winning the division something like 4. If they play out the entire season,
it's a lot higher than that.

    Going into tonights game against the Pirates the Expos need one more
    win to establish a new club record of 35 games above five hundred. They
    would bypass the record of the 1979 Expos. Also if the strike does last

    From my recollection of my running days the difference is pain.

    runners go as fast as the pain will let them; joggers go till pain
    starts.

    Or as previously mentioned a runner will set a goal and make it
    regardless of pain although I did the July noon stuff and misjedged my
    goal and about passed out, vomited a few times, made it and quit.

re: others

I never said that running was the toughest sport in the world, but I surely
ain't gonna kick the bucket at 66 from clogged arteries. In fact at 66 I hope
to be running my 40th Boston Marathon.

 Hey I'm a jogger and I set goals and achieve them. Just not as fast as
 the runners that all. Then again if being a runner means being as snobbish
 as Dave describes who wants to be one?

 Good think for me I know =BoB=, so I know that's not true of all runners
 but there are many runners out there who think down on us joggers. Too
 bad for them cause we have more fun........

    Stop your crying. If fans from cities like Montreal supported your

    I agree with you totally the Montreal fans have to be some of the worst
    fans. If they would get big crowds all the time then they could afford
    to pay for the big money players. But they even play with these young
    rookies and do well,the fans still don't show up. But now that they are
    doing so well the crowds finally show up(bandwagonning for sure). But I
    have to say myself and my co-workers have stuck with them through thick

    Once again I see you still have a great sense of direction.(sure you
    do) The Braves have always played well down the stretch. Your lucky the
    season ended early(maybe). Otherwise your Expos probably wouldve fallen
    apart. I know these rookies are going to want alot of money now. That
    means the team is very likely to fall apart the next few years. We'll
    just see what happens to the mighty expos.

It's all relative.

I used to consult in Greenville SC, and the coldest winter day I saw down
there had me out in just a heavy sweater, whilst all those good ol' boys
had out their Air Force snorkel parkas and their electric handwarmers.

They looked at me like I was nuts and I just asked them if they were really
cold or just trying to look like they were.

Of course, the friggen heat in the summer had my cojones draggin' on the
