I am surprised that loss of Ceballos prior to finals was not mentioned
as decisive factor in Suns loss. His presence may have been enough to
allow Suns to survive Seattle (where he got hurt).

Here are the perennial losers that have gone the most years without a
division title. This is before each sports '93 season:

    MLB NFL NBA NHL
    Cleveland - 39 NY Jets - 23 LA Clippers - 24 Toronto - 30
    Texas - 33 Kansas City - 21 Indiana - 22 New Jersey - 20
    Seattle - 17 Green Bay - 20 New Jersey - 19 Winnipeg - 15
    NY Yankees - 12 Phoenix - 17 Golden St. - 17 Buffalo - 12
    Montreal - 12 Atlanta - 12 Cleveland - 17 Minnesota - 9

    Notes:
    ------
MLB - Cleveland's last title was AL pennant. Texas used to be in
          Washington.
NFL - Jets last division title was in AFL. Phoenix used to be in St.
          Louis.
NBA - Clippers used to be in Buffalo and San Diego. New Jersey's last
          title was in ABA.
NHL - Toronto's last title was the NHL regular season championship.
New Jersey used to be in Colorado and Kansas City.
Winnipeg's last title was in the WHA.

Mildly amusing that the Yankees have now gone the 4th longest of 28 teams
in MLB without winning so much as one division title. With their
resources that's taken some work. And yet I keep hearing from the likes
of Chappy that this is the 13th year in row that the Yanks are the odds-on
favorite to win it all. At least we Red Sox fans are realistic about
    our team's futility...

I heard Buck Showalter (Show Walter what?) on WFAN last night, pulling
a Lou Holtz (sorry MikeL) about how tough the competition is going to
be in the new AL East this coming year.

He was saying that he was glad that Cleveland wasn't there, and that
he thought that the Red Sox were tough, and that he thought that it would
be a real dog fight blah blah blah....

Chappy, if you knew the first thing about Sox fans, you'd know that we
don't celebrate anything about 1967, 1975 or 1986. However, I will
advance the premise that the 1975 Game 6 was the best ballgame ever

At this very moment, no (although as I've said in the Yankee note I
think that NY's impending "resurgence" is starting to look more and
more like that check lost in the mail-- and so far this winter they've
done nothing but spin their wheels). But if the Sox don't blow it
and do indeed land one of the brightest minds in baseball in Dan
Duquette, and if Trot Nixon doesn't blow out his arm in a barroom
brawl, who knows, in a couple of years that window of opportunity
may just yet open again as the Yankees' slams shut. The Sox can get
smarter but George'll always be ugly...

Absolutely. That's what I meant about being realistic; it don't pay to
be otherwise if you're a Sox fan. Still, I'll take this faint hope as

re Celebration -- They were celebrating the pennant and the run to the
pennant and the team. That was a magical season if you were a Sox fan,
because it ended the long, long drought.

No one was celebrating getting beat by Bob Gibson in the series....

regarding Buck Show Walter To The Door, I think he was sandbagging.
The Sox aren't going to do Jack, and I've got more of a chance of taking
Tonya Harding's Spot on the Limp-Pic team than the Sox do of winning a
pennant this year. NY's only competition is Torawna (eh), and Buck

I think in all seriousness he managed to make that team play hard and I
    expect yankees to contend again.

But Jays are the class of baseball and with the current economics of
the game they will buy just enough pitching to support their superb
core and if they need a Cone etc for stretch will simply make that
    move.

It is nice of Jays to fool around until the end of july to allow for
Sox to pretend-contend so they can draw their 2mil without having to
invest in true quality (ex. Bill Hatcher 150+ games in centerfield).

In terms of a sports owner, it doesn't *get* any better than this! Think of
all the fat, boring, rich dweebs sitting in their luxury boxes wearing gray
