97.0. "The Turk returns" by SA1794::GUSICJ (Referees whistle while they work..) Thu Feb 25 1993 17:00

Well guys, the turk has finally asked me to hand in my playbook
    after 16.5 years of service!

Since my last day will be March 5th, and I don't know how active
I'll be next week, let me just say that I've had a lot of fun in
    SPORTS over the years.

Can't really say when I first started, but I do remember RUBY::.

And wouldn't you know it, just at tourney time too! So I guess
you guys won't have to listen to me 'explain' the ref's side of the
    issue anymore!

Guys, I cain tell you that this process stinks. After 16 years
and with western Mass in a quasi-depression, it don't look good. My
hope is that none of you will have to go through this downsizing.

Take care all of you, and maybe you'll see me on the tube sometime!

Oh yea, if any of you are in the Springfield area, drop me a line.
I'm the only 'gusic' in the phonebook.

Now who do we have that can slap Crisp upside the head when he makes another
foolish statement about hoops rules?

Geez, something must be wrong... a ref getting compliments? When
that happens I usually know they are full-of-it, but in this case
I suppose, I can take the compliments.

Thanks to all you guys. I'll still be around nexted week but I'm
not sure how much noting I'll be doing.

But I feel I should clear up a few misconceptions before I totally
    disappear.

    1. I hate the NBA

I do not hate the NBA. I love basketball period and I enjoy the
NBA. My problem with the NBA is that I feel it has become to much
entertainment where the powers to be are messing with the game just
so the fans will come out. I'm like a lot of other fans that would
like to see the NBA crack down on rough lowpost play, constant walking
    violations, etc. etc.

    2. I hate the NBA ref's

I do not hate the NBA ref's. I do feel that becuase of the nature
of the NBA game, they have had to bite their whistles more than once.
Personally, I would jump at the chance if the NBA ever came knocking
at my door. I also have a great deal of respect for those guys since
I know that they take an incredible amount of grief for 50K a year
while the average player makes 1mil +.

    3. Anyone that bashes referees or officials in any sport is a cretian
and doesn't know the first thing about what he is talking about.

This is also untrue although at times it probably sounded that
way. All I ask of any non-official is to put yourself in our position
for a couple of moments and then give us a break. Heaven knows we
could use a break now and then.

Since non-officials do not read publications aimed at officials,
you have no way of knowing that violence against all types of officials
is on the rise. Every month I read where some official has been
attacked by an irate fan over a call. Folks, this is no joking matter
and it is not getting any easier when folks see coaches and fans on
TV abusing the officials. It does rub off on the kids!

So, next time you're at a game and the ref in your opinion blows
a call, think twice about the company around you. There might be a
small kid that sees this behavior as acceptable only to find out as
a player that it is not.

Other than that, rant and rave on. As I told Crisp, cheer all
you want, but remember what it would feel like if it were you...

    4. Pennsylvania sports and country rule.

This is the gospel! Not only does Pa have some of the best
athletes in the country along with some of the best schools, but it
is also 'heaven'. Must be if West Virginia's slogan is 'almost
    heaven.'

No finer state to raise a family, and you won't find any more
loyal fans than those that live in Western Pa. Although I live in
Mass, my heart belongs and longs for Pa.

Other than the above 4 things, it's business as usual....

May you always have a loud pea in you whistle.

Darrell, give it up - the game has passed you by."

Folks, here again is what I mean....

> May you always have a loud pea in you whistle.

Hey Nazz, I haven't used a whistle with a pea in it for over 5
years! I don't think anyone doing bball uses pea-whistles anymore,
and I'm sure the NBA guys have switched.

Anyway, thanks.. I'll always remember the good conversations we
had...especially the ones about your shooting touch and others like,
well, I won't mention it here..

BTW, you should have moved to Agawam! They have about the best
wrestling team in the state, the girls hoop team is going for another
    W. Mass title, the boys team was seeded 2nd in the tourney, and of
course, you'd be a lot closer to your beloved UMASS...and of course,

Who said I was 'from' Agawam? I'm not, I was born and raised
in a little town called Waynesburg, Pa. located about 55 miles south
    of Pittsburgh.

Now, when I moved up here to Mass., I rented in Agawam, met my
wife who is a '77 grad of Agawam HS in Amherst. Anyway, after
gettin married, we moved into a place in West Springfield, but now
    we've moved on to Springfield.

So, for you ex-alum's of Agawam and Westside, I've graced both
places with my presence. Yea, they're already erecting the "goose
slept here" signs in my honor.. :-)

True to form though, both Agawam/Feeding Hills and Westside are
both great places to live with me giving a slight edge to Feeding
    Hills.

Anyway guys and dolls, I'm still here until Friday at ??PM.

BTW, thanks for all the compliments. I'll miss the SPORTS noters,
well some of them. Actually, this conference is better than the

quite some time all the fun, yes fun, I've had it here.

Since you decided to parody that song, from that time period, about
that conflict, I'll leave you with a piece of wisdom some close friends
who fought in that conflict have tried to impress upon me:

"It don' mean nothin' man, it don't mean nothin'...."

This file was my way of relieving some of the tensions of work.
Hasn't been easy for any of us.

No matter if it's with Digital or another company I wish everyone
in here the best. May the luck of the Irish be with all of you.
And yes I hope Digital somehow pulls out of this. The company
has been good to me for the most part and it's sad to see the
state of the company decline. Many many good people work here
and it's frustrating to watch a once-proud giant melt away.

I was fortunate to meet a lot of people in this file and we part
friends(and ya better hold a seat for me at the get togethers).
I wish I could have met everyone but I'll remember every one
    of y'all sumbitches 8^).

If'n any of y'all are around, I'm gonna stop into the GR in Chelmsford
on Tuesday after doing some thangs at work( how's about noon? 8^)
so if'n ya gots a spare moment(and a coupla bucks!) come on by.
If not, yunz will see me at a git together, Pats Day game, etc.

    Peace and thanks,
    MikeL

PS. What the hail you mean ND goin' down the tubes brews??!! 8^)

And waugamain your pledge, if ah reads you correct, should
allow you all of 15 minutes im note 35.. 8^)

Mike, best to you if you're still checking in today. Worst news I've
heard since last thursday. ND bashing will never be the same but most
of all I'll miss your wit and humor.............

 good luck

My group was summoned to a hastily arranged conference call where the
grand poobah told us who from our group was TFSOed. He,then said we can
expect another transition in two weeks and another in July(the scary,no
package one). He said just continue doing your jobs like nothing
    happened.

    Sheesh!!

yeah right, as if it's really motivating to maintain business as usual
    under these conditions.

The only motivation here is for the SLT (I'll bet that middle initial
standings for "licking", right?) to fleece their pockets before the
company slides under....

The band is just starting to play the first strains of "Nearer My God To Thee"
as I speak, so it can't be long now....
