31.0. "The Official San Diego Charger Note" by BSS::G_MCINTOSH (Earn More Sessions By Sleaving) Mon Jan 11 1993 17:12

Well someone, very knowledgeable, said that the key to the
Charger/Miami game would be if the Charger D could put pressure on
    Marino.

Well, they didn't and consequently lost 31-0 in this round of the
    playoffs.

The truth be known, the Charger receivers are frankly not very good.
Add to that rain, a wet ball, and a good defense and the receivers flat
out stink. This should be one of the holes to fix in the draft.

The Dolphins capitalized on every Charger blunder and the route was
under way. My son, a Dolphin fan, was thrilled, but tried VERY HARD
    not to hurt my feelings.

Chargers produced MUCH more than they should have this year, and I
believe they'll be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years
    in the AFC.

Well Walt, certainly Miller is the best, but I've seen him drop plenty
over the years that have hit him squarely between the numbers.

For the draft, I'd love to see a top notch WR, defensive tackle, inside
linebacker or cornerback (mainly because Donald Frank is sooo bad).

I think that Lewis is passable but the Chargers really need a good pass catching
tight end. Having a good tight would force the defense into some different
coverages so that they couldn't just double both Miller and Lewis al the
time.

Kudos to the charger fans who showed up the airport to greet the team when
they landed.

Here's hoping the chargers rule the East for many years to come...

31.8Still Dryin' OutPTLOMA::PUGHTue Jan 12 1993 21:2826
Well, it was a helluva ride this year. Thanks Chargers!

Regardless of the poor play Sunday, it just wasn't in the cards. On any given
gameday in the NFL........Chargers caught no breaks (not that it mattered).

Miller needs to be a complimentary receiver, not the main man. He didn't show
up Sunday.

I still feel there needs to be a spirited QB competition this summer between
Stan and Friesz.

My priorities for the draft: another kickbutt defensive lineman (they double-
teamed O'Neal Sunday and school was out), a wide receiver that either is or
will be a star in the NFL, and another linebacker. And if Ross modifies the
offense like he says he will (he used Henning's offense this year), then a
tight end that has hands would be nice.

And finally, to any Fish fans - congrats on a great victory and good luck this
week and beyond. But your Joe Robbie fans are the biggest jerks I've ever
encountered - they showed no respect to the Bolt fans who shelled out the bucks
to travel to the game. Fish fans can expect much more cordial treatment next
year at the Murph when Miami comes west.

All in all it was a great year; certainly better than I expected.

31.9Draft TalkSWLAVC::PUGHThu Jan 21 1993 14:0114
I heard Beathard answering questions on a call in show last night. He said
his priorities for the draft are as follows:

Defensive tackle (but he would take any defensive lineman that was good)

Linebacker

Wide Receiver

He didn't mention in what order he would like to get players at those positions,
but knowing how he drafts, he'll select the highest rated player on the board
at any of those spots.

Rumor has it that today the Chargers will announce:

Leslie O'Neal as the "Franchise Player"

Ronnie Harmon as one "Transition Player" (Right of 1st refusal)

Harry Swayne as the other "Transition Player"

If true, this means that Rod Bernstine will not be protected. I believe it
also means that Anthony Miller would be unprotected. And of course Gil Byrd
and David Richards are already unrestricted free agents.

Should be interesting.

think they can pass him off as damaged goods so no other teams touch

Re last: <Who is Harry Swayne?> Swayne is the starting OLT. He started
every game there this year and played well. I agree with protecting him.

Re: .17 The Chargers problem is that they have too many potential free agents
to protect. It makes sense not to protect Bernstine because he always gets
hurt and they have Butts, Harmon, and Bieniemy anyway.

Miller would be a tough defection, although he disappeared big time in the
playoff loss to Miami.

I figure they'll lose Bernstine and Richards at least. I hope they can persuade
Miller, Byrd, and the other lessor FAs to stay.

Alot of these players have been with the Chargers during the lean years
and now the Chargers are just turning the corner. I wonder how that
will affect their decisions to jump ship.

So the equation that I see is......

A+B+C+D+E+F+G or more money with another team

    	A = Up & coming team
B = Playoff money for the next few years
C = Legitimate chance at super bowl
    	D = Great climate
    	E = Great general manager
    	F = grass field
    	G = good head coach

The Bernstine situation is a tough one though. Both sides have good arguments
for their position.

Bernstine thinks he should be the main man and wants to be guaranteed that
he will start.

The Chargers probably did not protect him because he is injury prone.

I read the other day that he said he doesn't want to leave but feels he
should test the market.

The one I really want to watch is David Richards. I don't think it's any
accident that the Chargers were playing other guys at his position late
in the season. I figure he's gone.

Plummer will stay.

I can't see Byrd leaving but you never know. He was part of the lawsuit too.

I forget who the others are but there's several.

Also, the other day Beathard was asked if he knew of any players that for
certain will NOT be back next year.

His answer: Bob Gagliano.

The Donks are heavily wooing Bernstine. They flew him into Denver for an
interview. Also interested are the Chiefs, Colts, and a few other teams,
according the the SD Union/Tribune.

Anybody but the Donks or Raiders, pleeeeeze.

Also, O'Neal is piffed about being named the Franchise Player and is
participating with Wilbur Marshall in that bogus lawsuit against the league.

Are the player suing their own union? Didn't they agree to the current
free agency schema in their collective bargaining agreement or does the
NFLPA no longer exist or can it not speak for the players?

I think I remember the NFLPA disbanding after the last strike so that they
could pursue the litigation angle vs. the NFL owners. Did they reform to
negotiate the current agreement or was it simply voted on by the players?

I'm still confused over this whole thing....

Eagles. I say, make it happen!

The Donks have reportedly offered Bernstine $1.2 million per year. The
Chargers are trying to get him to stay. Decision due soon.

Dave Richards is being wooed by the Chiefs new OL Coach, Alex Gibbs, who of

LB Henry Rolling signed a contract with the Rams last night. It was inevitable
because after the offer was tendered the other day Beathard said there was no
way the Chargers would match it.

But the Chargers got back at the Rams by signing their right OG Joe Milinchik
(spelling is probably wrong). That probably means the Chargers figure that
Dave Richards is history.

With Rolling bailing, I hope this Jerrol Williams thing comes through. We'll
know by tomorrow.

The Sporting News says the Chargers still covet Fred Barnett, but I heard on
the radio last week that he wanted way too much money.

Regarding Munoz, what position would he play? Right tackle is weak, so that
would be nice, I guess. I'm sure he wants the big bucks.

Now that the Cards have found millions all of a sudden and have offered OLT
Harry Swayne the moon ($5.7 million over 3 years), should the Chargers:

1) Match the offer and keep Swayne (and screw up their salary structure)?

2) Or forget him and reopen talks with Anthony Munoz instead?

They have until Friday to match the Phoenix offer.

Also, now that Da Bears have signed Ironhead Heyward to a contract, will the
Chargers sign Brad Muster to replace Berstine?

Doug
31.41Goeas a GonerSWLAVC::PUGHTue Apr 13 1993 18:3613
The Chargers today or tomorrow will sign and then trade OL Leo Goeas to the
Rams for a '93 fourth round draft choice. If the Rams had signed him on their
own, they would owe S.D. a 3rd round choice instead, a price they felt was too
steep. Beathard wanted to unload him so he agreed to the above procedure in
order to get the deal done.

I always thought Goeas was a good player, but he got hurt all the time and
you couldn't count on him from game to game.

This gives the Chargers back the 4th round pick they lost when they signed
Jerrol Williams.

Well, Tony Blaylock did it - he signed with the Bears. Drag.

I gotta believe this changes the Charger draft strategy. They can't go into
the season banking on Pope, Vanhorse, or Davis taking up the slack. Maybe one
of those guys will emerge, but I wouldn't count on it.

Hot RUMOR: Beathard has offered the following to Phoenix for their 1st round
pick this coming Sunday (4th overall):

The Chargers 1st round pick (22nd overall)
	A fourth round pick
	OT Broderick Thompson
	DL George Thornton

If that is true and it were to materialize, who would the Chargers take with
that fourth pick overall? (The rest of the rumor had Phoenix then making
another trade to move up from 4th to 1st so they can take Hearst.) So assume
Hearst would be gone. The source where I heard the rumor said the Chargers
want OT Willie Roaf (is that his name?).

Ah, these rumors are usually bogus anyway. I think the Chargers should trade
DOWN, because I don't think that the WRs that will be available at 22 are
worth the pick. If they could pick up another 2nd round pick by trading down,
then they could get a good corner AND wide receiver.

Yes, it's getting closer to camp. But I've heard nothing other than the
signing of Stan Brock, which I think was a sigh of relief.

I still haven't heard about the status of any signings of key players. Did
you hear about the modifications just made by the NFL (and approved by the
MNFLPA I believe) with respect the franchise players? It seems the Chargers
have a choice in the O'Neal negotiation. They can offer him a contract at the
average of the five highest paid DLs, which is $2.9 million/yr. (ouch!), or
they can offer him $1.7 million and then let him go see what he can get on
the open market. At that point the Chargers could choose to match any other
offer O'Neal receives.

Also, the Chargers have yet to sign Humphries to a long term contract, which
apparently both sides want. Plummer is still unsigned, and the Faiders are
interested. As far as I know they haven't signed any draft picks yet either.
Why does this stuff take so long, especially now with this rookie cap?

31.59O'Neal Free to Test MarketSWLAVC::PUGHTue Jun 15 1993 20:3217
Yesterday the Chargers withdrew their designation of Leslie O'Neal as the
"Franchise Player," therefore leaving a $1.7 million offer on the table for
this year. If they had left him designated as the franchise guy, the
Chargers would have to pay him $2.9 million this year (the average of the
five highest contracted players at his position).

If someone else signs him, the Chargers can match the contract offer, or
receive 2 1st round picks in return.

I guess the Chargers are rolling the dice that nobody will offer him more
than $3 million a year, or maybe they want the 2 draft picks.

This move also gives the team the opportunity to so designate the real
franchise player, Junior Seau, after next season.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but Tampa Bay did the same thing with
Gruber, as did some other team that escapes me presently. But it was in
the papers this morning.

If memory serves, I believe this deal was negotiated subsequent to the
original agreement, which surprises me, cuz it seems heavily loaded in
favor of the owners. But I know that the deal for the team is the opportunity
to match any offer or two 1sts from the raiding team.

31.65SWLAVC::PUGHWed Jun 16 1993 17:1910
I don't think O'Neal is now considered a "transitional" player, because they
already have two of those; Swayne and Harmon. I think this is a special
deal because of the fuss made by the players that were designated "franchise"
players. If you remember - originally these guys weren't even allowed to
go get an open market offer, they were just guaranteed top 5 money.

So they bitched about it, and the owners and players' association came up
with this compromise. That's what I think is going on anyway.

Steve Hendrickson was interviewed on a radio show last night and he was
praising two rookies, Means and 4th round pick DL Ray Lee Johnson.

He said Means is just like Butts in terms of size and speed but there is one
major difference in their styles. As big as he is, Butts still tries to put
on a move and go around the tackler. Means just runs right over tacklers.
Hendrickson was definitely impressed.

But he sounded even more impressed with Johnson. This might be another one
of those low round steals that Beathard pulls off from time to time. (Remember,
Beathard traded to move up for this pick in the 4th round on draft day.)
Hendrickson said the offensive lineman were saying that Johnson is easily the
fastest guy they have to go against in practice, which is saying something
with Seau, O'Neal, and Grossman around.

In a development surely cheered by the rest of the AFC West, the Chargers today
announced that cornerback Gill Byrd will be lost to the team for the season.

Yesterday in practice Byrd suffered a knee injury in non-contact drills.
Exploratory arthroscopic surgery today confirmed that he had torn not one,
not two, but three knee ligaments.

The recurperation period is expected to be 12-16 months.

Comment: The only good thing about this is that it happened at the beginning
of training camp, while the team still has a chance to recover. But this is
not the team's strongest area, and it's going to hurt.

I'd say this is it for Byrd's career. He ain't a spring chicken.

No, in fact the DLs on the Chargers are getting healthy. O'Neal and Winter
both played Saturday. That's the good news. The bad news is that those two,
along with the rest of the team, SUCKED against the Niners.

Shawn Lee may be back this Sunday, but if not certainly by the Donk game at
Mile High (week 2). By then the Chargers will have a full complement. Lee
would probably replace Winter as a starting DT.

Grossman was held out as a precautionary measure. So for this Sunday it's
O'Neal at Right End, Grossman at Left End, Mims and Winter in the middle.
Not bad. And yes, Elway will be runnin' for his life. But that gives me

By running out of the endzone it prevents the punter from getting

no potential of a blocked kick. Only stopping the run back on the play.

They said they didn't want to get Kidd injured, but all he had to do was

Several things bugged me about the Chargers mostly lackluster performance
yesterday. The offensive and defensive lines didn't play well at all.
Receivers continue to drop balls. And when they had the Donks reeling in
the 3rd quarter, they didn't finish the job, which indicates a lack of
killer instinct. And when is Stan going to start playing well? He missed
some open receivers as well, one a sure TD bomb.

Glenn, remember what you said about Bieniemy on the phone Friday? He's gotta
go.

And I would start Means next week if I was the coach.

Sometimes the job interferes with recreation, ya know.....

I had no comment for that ugly affair last Sunday, and I was bummed out anyway
'cause Eric Moten blew out his knee during garbage time at the end of the game.

With all the injuries the Chargers are having I'm beginning to wonder
if much will get done this year.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, Ross finally faced reality and made Friesz the starter for
the Pitt game. And I have known all along that the tough part of SD's schedule
was the beginning of the season. They only have one home game from week 3
(Houston) thru week 11 (Chicago), and that one is against the cult figure
Chiefs next week. (There are a couple of byes in there). So if they can keep
playing .500 ball through the rough stretch, 5 of the following 7 are at home.
And the season finale is at Tampa Bay.

Hope springs eternal.

Things look pretty bleak for the Chargers now. The offensive line is
really decimated. Moten is out for the year. Hall is fine. Swayne
came back from an injury and the whole right side of the oline is new.

This is the simple reason for lack of success of the Chargers this
    year.

I just thought I would relay some comments that
Beathard made on the "Chargers Report" show that
appears after every Monday night football game.

Beathard made the following comments:

- He felt Friesz played "well enough" to win the
KC game but that it was unfortunate that there
were breakdowns in the special teams play
  (i.e. blocked field goals).

The way Beathard said "well enough", imho,
indicates that he thinks Friesz is just ok.

- It is up to Stan to prove in practice that he
  is the better QB.

- He can't put a finger on what's going wrong
with the team but he felt that the team
is coming on based upon their play against
  KC.

- I don't recall anybody making any comments
on guard Eric Moten. He tore up his knee
during the Seattle game when Friesz was
tackled on Eric's back leg. Eric underwent
knee surgery, is out for the season, and
  sufferred some significant nerve damage.
The nerve damage is effecting the motor
functions below his knee. Keoki(sp?) the
team trainer indicated that it is not
uncommon to have nerve damage but that
  Eric's nerve damage was significant.

- Jerrol Williams is out for the season
with a shoulder injury. Ross said that
his injury was similars to Bernstine
but worse. Steve Hendrickson is filling
in. Steve is 5'11" 250lbs and appears
to be a really nice guy(he was very
nice to the kids watching minicamp).

The way I look at it, I see the Chargers having a hard time making .500.

I agree with your comments in the last two replies, Glenn. I think it is
interesting that Beathard would avoid the real reason for the loss to the
Chiefs - Coaching mistakes. I'm a Ross fan, but he let Reilly (QB coach who
calls the plays) really screw up the last drive that resulted in the 2nd blocked
field goal. They marched all the way down the field being liberal in
play selection - until they got into the red zone. Then Reilly got
conservative. The people in my section were saying before the last set of
downs that the Chargers HAD TO GO FOR THE TD! That would have put SD ahead by
11 points (21-10) with 4.5 min to go. Settling for a FG only meant that
Montana would merely tie the game and send it into OT. They had to make
Montana score twice to beat them. It was screwed up philosophy and play
calling that cost the Chargers that game.

As for this Sunday, the weakest part of the Chargers team (offensive line)
goes against the Raiders strength (they lead the league in sacks). I'm afraid
it looks pretty bleak for the bolts this weekend.

So now Jerrol Williams is on IR, out for the year. There's a wasted $1.7 mil
for you. I figure he won't be back next year, cuz he didn't do much when he
was healthy anyway.

Humphries had a second medical opinion on his right shoulder, and the diagnosis
came back the same - a very deep bruise. He status is still the same; he is
in and out with throwing velocity and can't be counted on. If Friesz goes down
the Chargers are done for this year, which they may be anyway due to this
plethora of injuries.

More later,

Doug

31.141Schedule Has Very Little to Do With ItSWLAVC::PUGHThu Oct 28 1993 15:5131
So far this year they've played the same exact schedule as last year.
The only thing you can say about the schedule is that when the team got on a
roll last year, it started with the easier stretch of the schedule. Otherwise
they played well because of good health and good coaching.

This year, playing the SAME set of teams as last year (thus far), they haven't
won due to injuries and turnover from free agency. You lose guys like Gill Byrd,
Eric Moten, and your QB and it will have an impact.

This year the tough part of the schedule (which they're in now) coincides with
a lot of injuries (including a hurt starting QB), so they lose.

Tim, let's take a flipped situation; do you think Seattle is doing well
this year merely because they have a 5th place schedule? I think not. This
year they have stayed healthy and have a good QB. Last year the 'Hawks were
decimated by injuries and had a stiff at Quarterback.

I think they should do away with the so called "5th Place Schedule" anyway.
I don't think it's right. There is so much parity in the NFL that in many
cases teams finish 5th because of injuries, not because they are lousy. So the
following year they end up playing a different set of opponents and have
the opportunity to clean up. Not that they do, just that the opportunity is
there. And what about the teams in 4-Team divisions? The last place finishers
in those divisions don't get any "5th place schedule." It's a joke.

My worst fear is that the Chargers will suffer even more injuries in '93 and go
completely into the toilet, finishing 5th. Then next year when they are
HEALTHY, clean up again - at which point I'll again have to listen to Donk and
Faid fans say they're winning again only because of the schedule. What bunk.

The Donks of a few years ago are a perfect illustration of this debate. They
went to the Super Bowl after playing a 5th place schedule. They "earned" the
fifth place schedule because they finished last the year before when they

on you. When I read your note I remember Todd Christensen saying the same

I thought the Donks had that one real bad year, and there was a lot of talk
the next year that they were winning a lot playing that "last place schedule."
But then the Chargers sucked in those days so the Donks might not have finished
last.

On another front, the Chargers signed TE Mike Dyal, formerly a Chief and

Chargers had an offense for the 2nd week in a row and beat Minnesota
30-17 and are now 1 game out of first place (after GB beats KC
    tonight).

Rookie Natrone Means recorded his first career 100-yard rushing
game and scored the winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter
Sunday to rally the San Diego Chargers to a 30-17 victory over
    the Minnesota Vikings.

Means, who had 105 yards on 17 carries, scored from seven yards out
4:48 into the fourth quarter to give the Chargers, 4-4, a 23-17 lead.
John Friesz completed 20 of 32 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns.
Anthony Miller caught seven of the passes for 142 yards.

Friesz also had about 5 passes dropped (which continues to be a problem, BTW),
so he coulda been 25 out of 32 or so.

I said several notes ago that the Chargers needed to be 4-4 after the first
8 games and they've done it!! Not the way I had hoped, but they pulled it off.

Now they're ready for the stretch run. There is only one other AFC team
(Seattle) that still has 5 home games left, so the Chargers are in good shape
in spite of their injuries. Speaking of which, Nate Lewis suppopsedly is out
for the next 2-4 weeks with his sprained knee.

The stupid pathetic Bears gave one to the Raiders yesterday, so just for that
the Chargers are going to beat them senseless this Sunday night.

Trading Butts for a 5th round pick is a HUGE mistake!

Think about it....if you were the coach of another team, you would
take Butts for a 5th round pick in a minute! I would too!

Butts is the Cinderella story from Fla St. The blocking back
for Sammie Smith (whose out of football I believe) who never
carried the ball. He came out and ran his heart out for the
Chargers. He won the playoff game against the Chiefs with his
50+ yard touchdown run. But the Chargers never REALLY treated
him right IMHO. They should have given the ball to him 25 times
a game and let him create havoc while scoring 3 touchdowns a
game. I believe he's the kind of back who just gets better when
he gets hit. Remember all the punishing hits he DELIVERED!

And we give this up for a 5th round pick! That stinks!
I like Natrone Means alot, but it still stinks!

    	I'm here! I'm here!

What's so impressive about the Charger victories is that
3 of the 5 were on the road. They beat Denver in Denver,
the Raiders in LA and the Seahawks in Seattle. Beating
the Chiefs is a victory no matter where it is, at home or
    	away.

It sure is nice to see the Chargers plastered on the front

It's also real nice to watch ESPN's SportsCenter and have

and only have 2 players the same, Means and Rhett. Means has scored
every week and has 2 100+ yrd games. Im not sure but 5TD's may lead

There was no "huge break" to it. Beathard traded the next

Means. It was a calculated move by Beathard.

They did a special on Inside the NFL (I think thats the show I was
watching) about Humpries, seems like a great down to earth type guy
(Why is it most QB's seem down to earth and great DB/WR/RB seem to
be cocky ?). I hope Humpries stays healthy, someone has to dethrone
Buffalo, Miami with no Running Game wont do it, KC has the next best
shot and maybe age has finaly cought up with Joe+Marcus so it may be
left up to SD.... Of course come playoff time it will be tough for
anyone to take buffalo down in buffalo so Keep winning SD...

Ditto, MaB. Means is a member of my FFL_C Doovers.

I was fortunate enough to watch ol' Natrone a bunch of times as he tore
up the ACC. Unlike Butts, who's had some good moments in FFL, he plays
the whole game and doesn't just mop up near the end zone.

The Whiners can thank the Goats for being able to get Young with
the 7th pick of the '94 draft 1st round. The pick in the trade
with the Bolts was the 15th pick in round 1; they subsequently
traded on draft day with the Goats for the 7th pick. The Whiners
took Young, the Goats took Gandy. I think both teams would rather
have Means, don't you?

No the 49ers would not rather have Means over Bryant Young. The 49ers
draft was all about defense. Young is playing well right now as a
    starter.

There are 4 teams that had a first round NFL bye (SF, Pitt, Dall & SD).
There's alot of Super Bowl experience and history in that group. Pitt,
SF and Dallas all have won a bunch of Super Bowls and been in alot of
them. The Chargers have never even been to a Super Bowl.

I find it very interesting that the two teams in the AFC Championship
Game are the 2 AFC teams that play most like NFC teams. Both

Dwain Painter, the Chargers' QB coach, is a notive of Pitcairn, Pa.,
which is the town where I live. his ex-wife also came from here.

They were married for 30 years, and spent most of those years
hopscotching around the USA as Painter moved from team to team with his
coaching jobs. In 1988, the Painters got to come home when Dwain
landed a job as receivers coach for the STEELERS under Chuck Noll.

When Noll retired, Painter was not retained, but quickly found a job
with the Indy Colts. His wife, Diane, was tired of moving, and stayed
in Pittsburgh. They later divirced, but remained close.

Well, hours after the STEELERS lost to the Chargers in the AFC
Championship game, Diane Painter phoned her mother and told her, "I'm
the one who should be going to the Super Bowl, not his
girlfriend."(Painter is engaged to be married).

After that phone call, she went out to her garage, started her car, and
sat in the car until the carbon monoxide fumes had taken her life.

Painter returned to Pittsburgh for the services, and reportedly has not
been able to enjoy the time leading up to the Super Bowl. Some players
have said that Painter is visibly upset.

What a great game. My Chargers lost and should have won, but what
I saw was 2 heavyweights standing toe to toe and slugging it out.

We made too many errors, you can't win when Coleman gives the ball up
on our 20 yard line (7 for KC), Martin coughs up the ball on their 11
yard line (should have been 7 for SD), Bush misses a ball fluttering
about the air above him for a pick on their 20 (another potential 7 for
us), not to mention the need for a premiere receiver and I won't even
talk about staying in your lanes on punt returns.

Anyway, it was a heck of a good game, back and forth, back and forth,
and ended up in OT. That was good football.
