6607.0. "Ethan Allen??" by ALFSS2::HENDERSON_J () Mon Apr 14 1997 13:07

     Hi,

You Black Powder buffs out there may be of some assistance in the
research of a little single shot I picked up this weekend.

It is known as a Bar Hammer Pistol, and is about .36 cal.,with a half
octagon 3 inch barrel. It is double action only, with a rounded walnut
two panel grip. The percussion cap goes on the very top of the receiver
with the hammer resting on it. Things could get exciting, real quick,if
you tripped and it was in your pocket. It is small enough for your
pocket, only about 6 or 7 inches in total length. The barrel unscrews
from the frame for loading, and the barrel though a little dirty,is
complete with all the lands and grooves intact. No I did not,nor will I
clean anything on this little guy. It has about 95-100% blued finish in
tact, and the action still cycles the hammer. On the side of the hammer
it says "ALLENS PATENT" and on one of the barrel flats it say
ALLEN&XXXXXXX,can't read the last part of it. There is a serial number
6XX on one of the other barrel flats.

     Any information would be appreciated.

     Thanks,

     Joe

No doubt an "Allen and Thurber" made in good old Worcester, Ma. The
company had many names as partners changed and it was passed down in
the family as I remember. One of the original names - in the 1850's was
Allen and Wheelock. I think they were brother's in law.

The company is notable for the huge variety of firearms produced and
the uniqueness of many of the actions. It's a good company to collect
due to the fact that the variety is so large and for the most part the
arms aren't too pricey. There is a decent book in print which can give
    you far more information.
