6612.0. "Is the worthwhile?" by MAIL2::KOSTARAS () Tue May 20 1997 16:16

I've got a chance to buy a Sako Finnbear (w 3X9 Burris scope) in 300Win
mag. The rifle seems to be in unfired condition.

My only concern is that the barrel is 20" in length. I would like to
use the rifle for long range (300+ yds) deer shots. Is the "short barrel"
    something to be concerned about.

    I currently have a Marlin MR7 in 30-06, and a Winchester Model 54 (carbine)
in .270, but at $500.00 the Finnbear is calling my name.

No... You may lose a little in velocity, though not likely enough to
worry about, and you'll gain some stiffness in the barrel which should keep
your groups tighter. On an iron sight barrel you want more length to increase
your sight-radius, on a scoped rifle the shorter barrel is an advantage.

Think about how limber a 10 ft length of 1/4" dowel is and how stiff a
piece only 10" long is... After user error, vibration in the barrel is one
of the biggest contributors to shot to shot differences. If you can stiffen
the barrel and make the bullet exit at the peak of the vibration cycle, you'll
bring your groups together dramatically.

So what your sayin Al is:

"It's not the length of your barrel but how you use it" ????

     Sorry, couldn't help myself.... :-)

6612.3What about noise?AUSS::HAGARTYWed May 21 1997 04:4513
Ahhh Gi'day...

You might want to be a little concerned, with a 300WM in a 20" barrel.

I have used a few high powered rounds with a 20" barrel, and the noise
and blast is definitely a problem. If you are concerned about either of
these, then I would pass. Although, I have to admit that a 300WM is
going to cause a fair bit of both, no matter what the length of the
    tube.

You are going to have that much power up your sleeve, that the loss of
a 100-200 fps over a 24" tube is not going to be a big deal, but noise
    is still something to consider.

    re .3

ditto. I have an M1 "Tanker" with a 18' barrel. Muzzle blast is
definitely more than a normal M1.

How much does it weigh? I think recoil may be a factor.
Although I consider the guns in my collection that bark the most
and kick the hardest fun to shoot... :-)

I have a Winchester M-70 featherwieght in .280 Remington that can
be painfull when shooting for groups off a bench with 165 gr bullets.
Past recoil shoulder pad solved that problem.

Sounds like a nice gun to add to the collection at a nice price.

Funny how you never feel the recoil when you are hunting, though :^}.

18 foot barrel? Just press the muzzle up against the buck and pull the trigger!
:-)

that's why you calls it a "Tanker"... you need a tank to haul the
    darned thing around!
