2580.6Will full BACKUP, RESTORE clear the CPT?M5::LWILCOXChocolate in January!!Mon Jan 27 1997 13:3412
It looks as though this customer might be seeing a "new" problem with
snaps becoming corrupt since he's on 6.1-11 and apparently this problem
was fixed some time before that.

In order to start with a "clean" CPT, does he just need to do a full
DBO/BACKUP DBO/RESTORE cycle? I want to prevent him from getting a full
CPT since this is an Alpha (no VMS patch utility), and since it's a
snapshot file he can't clear the CPT until Version 7.0.

Thanks again.

    Yes, a backup/restore should get things to start fresh. But, how do
    you do a backup if you have entries in the CPT?

    Backup only checks the CPT for those files it is backing up - snapshots
    are not backed up.

    I have had customers do this.

Exactly.  His backups work fine.

Paul, thanks for the confirmation. That will at least buy him some time.

2580.10It's back....M5::LWILCOXChocolate in January!!Thu Mar 06 1997 15:1915
and it's back again! Correction, also, this is on a VAX, not on an Alpha.

Is there some way to verify the page? As it's a snapshot page I can't find
a way to get to it in alter or with verify. I want to try to get some idea
of how far off the checksum on the snapshot page is from what DBMS thought
it should be. I don't know if that will help or not...

The customer will find out more information about the configuration, disks,
controllers, etc.. What else would be helpful for me to find out? The only
way they have at this time to clear out the CPT is to restore the database.
This is 6.1.1.1.

Thanks.

Depending on what you want to "verify" a dump has to at least read all the
structures to display them...

Ah, good point. So, if I can DBO/DUMP/SNAP on that page successfully then
at that particular moment it would mean that as far as DBMS is concerned
the checksum is ok. And what I need to do is have them somewhere/somehow
see if they are getting checksum errors logged someplace when they happen
to end up with a snapshot page in the CPT.

Thanks, Kathy!
