977.0. "X.500 on Digital UNIX and AltaVista Directory?" by HAN::FISCHER_HE () Thu Feb 20 1997 14:46

    Hi,

I have to make a proposal for a customer who wants
x.500 services and a Windows GUI for management as
well as MAPI protocols for client access.
Is there a combination of our DIGITAL UNIX X.500
directory services with the new Altavista Diectory
Services (announced Enterprise or XL edition?)
    a way we can propose?
Will the AltaVista Management Client (on NT) allow
    management of our X.500 DSA's?

AltaVista was also announced for UNIX. Does that mean
a replacement of recent X.500 direct. services on DIGITAL
UNIX or will it be ported to other UNIX platforms?

    Thanks
    Heinz Fischer

The current Altavista clients use LDAP exclusively, and so cannot
talk to the existing X.500 DSA (except via infobroker).
They also work with a fixed schema, which may or may not be suitable
for your customer, and make some assumptions about the directory
structure (E.g. the naming context is /o=xxx).

There is a long list of reasons why AltaVista Directory will not
interoperate with Digital X.500. We do not support any interoperation.

AltaVista Directory 97 (the current release) will be superceded in due
course by AltaVista Directory 97.5 (the next release). This release is no
longer called "Enterprise" or "XL" and will have a different set of
features than orginially proposed.
