3179.0. "Moving DDS entries between nodes" by KYOSS1::ERICKSEN (Cindy Ericksen/DTN:323-4051) Wed Mar 12 1997 16:54

    Hi All!

Does anyone have a guesstimate as to how long it would take to move
approximately 8000 entries from 1 DDS system to another?

Currently the entries are owned by a 2-node cluster in the US and the
customer would like them moved to a x-node cluster in Basel (also the
master node). The network link to Basel is over T1 with a 56K link to
the system with DDS (according to the diagram I have). There are 6
world search nodes with 2 in the states, 3 in Basel, and 1 in Japan
(over 64KB link with Basel). There is also a copy all node located
    somewhere in Europe (I believe).

Also, does anyone know the impact of ALL-IN-1, MailWorks, and
TeamLinks usage on this system might have? There are always some
weekend usage of the systems and I wonder if it would affect the
    performance of the move.

Thanks for any help on this!

    Cindy

A week-end sounds reasonable to me...

You might want to grab a copy of the updated MBMAN in the XDDS kit.
(The XDDS installation procedure has a MBMAN-only option) It has
some new commands that support bulk operations (including MOVE).

You mentioned ALL-IN-1; are the entries to be moved 'managed' by
the ALL-IN-1 on the current node (ie do they have a proxy)?
If so, there may be issues with moving those entries off-node.

    Thanks for the info Dave!

I never heard of XDDS (sorry - a bit behind the times am I) - I'll
track it down and read up on it. Would a new MBMAN affect anything
else (e.g. lookups from ALL-IN-1 or MailWorks)? As this is a
production system and I don't have a test system (yet) the customer
    might be a little reluctant.

With regards to entries being owned by ALL-IN-1. I've seen a few on
the fly but I'm sure there are more. They don't use ALL-IN-1 to
maintain the records anymore - they have an in-house database from
which they generate DDS updates but not all the old ones were removed.
I'll try to track them down to alleviate possible problems with the
    move.

Does anyone know whether the manipulation of the DDS entries will have
a major impact on DDS lookups from MailWorks or ALL-IN-1? My major
concern would be if user lookups would negatively affect the task at
    hand.

    Thanks again!

3179.3XDDS reg VMS v6.1+, DECnet/OSIKYOSS1::ERICKSENCindy Ericksen/DTN:323-4051Thu Mar 13 1997 16:549
Me again! I just checked on XDDS (MAILbus Directory Synchronizer -
I've heard of that!). The only problem is that the software
requirements are for OpenVMS v6.1 or later and DECnet/OSI - the
customer is running OpenVMS v5.5-2 and DECnet Phave IV.

So it doesn't look good for getting enhanced tools (but I'll pull the
    docs for future reference anyway!)
