Documentation for the PCSI Utility that ships with OpenVMS V7.1 can be obtained
from:

* OVMS_71_PCSI.PS;1 is the PCSI Developer's Guide. Both the text and the
examples in the product description language reference section have
been extensively revised and many errors/omissions corrected. The
beginning chapters have been revised to a lesser degree with some new
topics added. Please discard your old manual and switch to this one.

* OVMS_71_SYSMAN_MAN1.PS;1 is the first part of the System Manager's Guide:
Essentials. Chapter 3 of this book discusses how to use VMSINSTAL and
        the PCSI Utility.

* OVMS_71_SYS_UTIL_REF2.PS;1 is the second part of the System Manager's
Utilities Reference Manual. A section on the POLYCENTER Software
Installation (PCSI) presents the syntax of the PRODUCT commands.
DCL Help for the PRODUCT command is generated from this section.
All PRODUCT commands (including PACKAGE) are now described here.

To print just the PCSI relevant material from these books, excerpts from the
two system management books and the entire developer's guide are available in
the following location:

  the OpenVMS documentation directory.

See note #313 for historical information on PCSI documentation for OpenVMS
V6.0 - V7.0.

PCSI kit developers should discard their old PCSI Developer's Guide and switch
to using the V7.1 version as it contains many corrections, new PDL examples,
and other new/revised topics.

Besides numerous bug fixes, the PCSI Utility for V7.1 contains the following
new features:

- New PDL statement options:
  - "with helptext" for the information statement
  - "with helptext" for the option statement
  - "abort" for the error statement

- New DCL commands:
  - PRODUCT EXTRACT FILE
  - PRODUCT EXTRACT PDF
  - PRODUCT EXTRACT PTF
  - PRODUCT LIST
  - PRODUCT SHOW UTILITY

- Formating changes to the PRODUCT FIND and PRODUCT SHOW command displays

Below is an excerpt from the OpenVMS V7.1 New Features Manual that describes
the DCL enhancements for the PRODUCT commands.

              o EXTRACT PTF

              o LIST

              o SHOW UTILITY

In addition, the format and content of the display has

              o FIND

              o SHOW HISTORY

improvements have also been made to the interactive
dialog for several PRODUCT subcommands, especially
PRODUCT INSTALL. More detailed examples are in the PRODUCT
command section of the OpenVMS System Management Utilities
              Reference Manual.

Following are brief explanations of the new subcommands.
More detailed explanations and examples are in the
POLYCENTER section of the OpenVMS System Management
              Utilities Reference Manual.

    3.14.1 EXTRACT FILE Subcommand

The EXTRACT FILE subcommand retrieves a user-specified
file or files from a sequentially formatted software
product kit. A file type of .PCSI denotes a sequential
kit. The original name of the file is preserved when it is
          extracted.

    3.14.2 EXTRACT PDF Subcommand

The EXTRACT PDF subcommand retrieves the product
description file (PDF) from a sequentially formatted
software product kit. A file type of .PCSI denotes a
sequential kit. The file type of the extracted PDF file
          is .PCSI$DESCRIPTION.

    3.14.3 EXTRACT PTF Subcommand

The EXTRACT PTF subcommand retrieves the product text file
(PTF) from a sequentially formatted software product kit.
A file type of .PCSI denotes a sequential kit. The PTF is
stored in a product kit as a text library file. The file
type of the extracted PTF file is .PCSI$TLB. In addition, a
text file version of this text library file is created with
          a file type of .PCSI$TEXT.

    3.14.4 LIST Subcommand

The LIST subcommand lists the names of the files contained
in a sequentially formatted software product kit. A file
type of .PCSI denotes a sequential kit. All files in a kit
are listed unless you use the /SELECT qualifier to specify
          a subset of the files.

    3.14.5 SHOW UTILITY Subcommand

The SHOW UTILITY subcommand displays the version of the
POLYCENTER Software Installation utility that implements
          the PRODUCT command.
