7141.0. "Determining memory/versions for LPS20?" by THEBAY::WIEGLEB (Voracious schools of lottery girls) Thu Apr 03 1997 00:39

    Forgive me if this seems an ignorant question, but...

    How do I get information about an LPS20 in my office? I'm trying to
    determine what level it's at now, so I can update the firmware,
    hardware, and software appropriately to print Level 2 PostScript.

    From the research I've done in this conference I understand that 16MB
    of memory or more is needed, controller firmware of V3.7 or later, and
    PrintServer software of V5.1 or later.

    How do I determine how much memory is in it now, what controller
    firmware, and what PrintServer software version the current incarnation
    is at?

    Thanks,

7141.1Try remote consoleBIS1::VERHOELSTThu Apr 03 1997 08:008
Have you tried running the remote console
$ MC LPS$console (printer node name)
LPS>version
LPS>config
LPS>exit

This will give you the information you're looking for

7141.2How to get the firmwareNECSC::HARVEYPrintserver Support- America's ZoneThu Apr 03 1997 14:0717
    Dave,

    	Using the remote console will not provide all the information
    needed. You will need to power off the printer and turn it back on.
    The printer will go through its self test and when it displays its
    ethernet hardware address there will be three sets on numbers displayed
    under this MAC address. Make note of the three numbers, these are the
    firmware revisions.

    	To support Postscript level II the LPS20 printer needs to be a
    TurboPrintserver20 printer vs. a plain Printserver20. There are two
    type of controllers for a LPS20, the plain 20 and the turbo20. The
    Turbo controller is the prerequsite for the option memory card,
    LPS3X-UA and the printer needs the latest 5.1 of Printserver software.

    Thank much. I'll check into this to see what we're actually running.

    Dave and Ben,

    	There are two flavors of the LPS20. The plain20 which uses a RTVAX
    chip set on its controller. There is the Turbo controller that is used
    in the LPS20 and in the LPS32. It uses the CVAX chip set. By noting the
    firmware revision you can tell the differences:

    LCD panel

    08-00-2b-xx-xx-xx
    2.3  1.2  1.1
     ^	  ^    ^
     |    |     Duplex Cntlr firmware
          Print Engine contoller firmware
     LPS Controller firmware

    If the first number is 2.x or greater then the printer has a Turbo
    controller. If it is 1.x then it is using a plain controller. To be
    able to support Postscript Level II on a LPS20 printer it needs to have
    a Turbo controller and be booted with LPS 5.1 software. The part number
    for the Turbo controller is 54-20830-01 (for LPS20 only) or 54-20830-03
    (for LPS20 and LPS32). If your Turbo card is using anything below 2.3
    then the whole Turbo controller needs to be swapped out for a later
    one. There has been some major bug fixes that required rework of the
    controller.

    The part number for the Postscript level II upgrade is LPS3X-UA. This
    kit comes with the optional memory card with qty. 1- 4MB/ 72 pin/
    70nSec/ nonparity memory simm and the latest firmware for the Turbo
    card 3.8 is the revision. Bundled into the price of this kit is the
    royalties for Postscript Level II.
