| In my case I was running the Exchange client that is shipped on the '95 CD.
This is in 3 seperate user profiles. Fax worked as well as MS fax ever did.
I installed the `Windows Messaging update'....
Fax still worked for the profile I was using when I did the update.
I could not get FAX working for any other profile.
I tried to de-install FAX and re-install it.
After this I got the "GENERAL ERROR" message.
I de-installed EVERYTHING, re-installed it all, it still did not work as it
should. I discovered that each profile had registry entries pointing to both
Echange and the Messaging update.
I re-installed, then de-installed everything from each profile in turn. This
cleaned the registry.
Start again...
I installed Exchange and FAX on the first profile. I moved to the second
profile, I de-installed and re-installed Exchange and Fax. Same again for the
third profile. This gave every profile a valid set of data, Fax worked again for
everybody...
This is where I am now.
I have not yet taken the next step, re-installing the `Windows Messaging update'
I plan to do so, then reboot and let all of the setups complete, then login to
another profile, re-do the install, reboot again, repeat for the third profile.
After all this I will then know if `Windows Messaging' and Microsoft FAX can
co-exist...
I cannot find any entry in the MS KB that refers to any issues in this area.

| the order that we've seen work...
remove all FAX and E-mail software
install Windows Messaging (Win95's Add/Remove software,
Windows Setup, Exchange)
install FAX ((Win95's Add/Remove software, Windows Setup)
install "real" Exchange client (from your local site server)
(optionally) install Outlook (part of Office 97)

| Has anyone else had problems with Microsoft FAX in which the FAX is received
(apparently) fine, but about 2/3 of the way down the page, there is a line or 2
of garbage, and then the rest of the fax is rotated left about half a
page-width? This happens absolutely reliably with every page of every fax I
have received recently.
I have a SupraFAXModem 288 (upgraded to 33.4).

Re 'General Error':
I suffered this one. There is a Knowledge Base article at
MS web site that states that the original Exchange client
and fax software must be installed and configured first
before installing an update to the client. I tried going
through this sequence and the problem didn't clear. I then
re-installed Win95 and went through the recommended
sequence again and the problem went away. I actually
installed a later client than the 'Windows Messaging'
update, because local sources tell me that version doesn't
work properly with Exchange Server 4.
This nonsense took up several hours of my life, Mr Gates!
I can now send or receive a fax. I emphasise 'a fax'
because it leaks so badly that I need to reboot in between!
For example, sending a 7-page fax from a clean boot left my
resources down in the yellow range.
Anyone know of a fix for this?
Anyone know of an alternative 32-bit fax client that works?
..and is free?
