2856.0. "Is there Notes after no Vax" by WMOIS::NILSEN () Tue Mar 18 1997 13:08

Our building is going to shut off all VAX accounts. Is there a way
I will be able to still read notes after the vaxes are gone?
Everyone is moving to WIN-95 or NT and Exchange mail.

    Thanks Bob

P.S. Shut down date is Apr 1, 97

Certainly, Bob. There's netnotes at least. See ISVHUB::NETNOTES I
think. Then there are www notes tools. I haven't tried the latter
other than to browse some conferences through URLs such as the
    following: http://www-notes.lkg.dec.com/noted/windows-95

There are probably other alternatives I don't know about...

I use Teamlinks Conferencing to read Notes (and write replies).

Why don't you get a stand-alone vax, and then it doesn't matter what
your short sighted site (sic) does with it's vaxes.
I've been stand-alone for years and if/when the server goes away,
oh well, it won't matter to my vax.

I couldn't live without my RNU (offspring of AVN)! So is there an alternative
(to RNU) that is Web or Exchange aware? (While I don't have an OpenVMS VAX
issue at present I would like to have more options).

That said, I've never been impressed by the web interface.
It's inevitable when using the notes AltaVista searcher at
http://altavista.notes.lkg.dec.com:8000/ but for any real noting
you (or at least I) need something a whole lot better.

I found my way on the notes files . I would like to use my notebook.
I also found a file called NetNotes on www-ccs.wro.dec.com/NT/KITs/
but the license key is out of date. Is there a updated key or file?
The info said this file will use your old notesbook file from VMS.

The catch is that you have to translate the DECnet addresses to IP

2856.11Don't forget the server!RINGSS::WALESDavid from Down-UnderTue Mar 18 1997 23:4117
G'Day,

Don't worry too much. When all the VAXes are gone you wont only lose
your client access to notes but there wont be any machines left to host the
conference either so you wont be missing out on anything. There has been talk
about a Windows NT based server but I am yet to see any use of it within DEC.

Even if the servers remain the biggest problem I have with PC clients is
that they all tend to keep your notebook file locally so if you use a number of
different machines you have to keep moving the latest version of the file to the
client that you want to use. I have this same problem with USENET news and its
newsrc file.

Progress - bah humbug! It will be long time before I switch off the
VAXstation on my desk.

David.

But, David, there is a server component to Netnotes. I've used
it. It works fine! One can even migrate an existing VMS-based
NOTES conference to an NT Netnotes one. I did it a long time ago
but as the need wasn't there, I dropped further exploration at
that time. May be time to revisit...

Digital has a very large number of customers which buy PCs and run
the PC operating systems. But these customers keep telling us that
they have only two real choices for their `bet the business' machines,
MVS on IBM mainframes, and VMS on DEC mainframes.

It would seem that as long as machines need to be highly available,
both MVS and VMS will remain with us.

...and since I do not see DEC selling MVS and its platforms, I'll bet
that we keep selling VMS, which means we keep running VMS in house.

Does MVS have a notes system?

2856.17Netnotes vs Teamlinks ?STOWOA::tavo.ogo.dec.com::DiazOctavioWed Mar 19 1997 17:407
This may be more apprpriate for a Teamlinks conference, but...

I have downloaded the netnotes program and it looks "exactly" like Teamlinks
Conferencing, so my question is: Is this correct? If yes, why are we paying for
some 3rd party licensing, when Teamlinks is available?

As I understand it, Netnotes was originally developed either within
DIGITAL or because of very close ties with DIGITAL. I don't believe
DIGITAL pays for the perpetual client license that we have. I believe
Teamlinks is 16-bit code whereas Netnotes is 32-bit. I've never used
Teamlinks so I do not know how much similarity there is between the
    two.

Well, I have been *trying* to use netnotes for a couple of weeks now
and all works fine except for notesfiles that are hosted by node NOTED
(WIN95 and IBMPC). The only time I have any luck in actually being
able to read notesfiles on NOTED is on the weekends or in the wee hours
of the morning. Is there a correctable reason for this or should I
plan on foregoing the pleasures of these notesfiles on a timely basis?

You didn't say if you were using DECnet or TCP/IP -- and if you were
routing through an existing "pass-thru" server, like one of the CCS Site
Servers (alfs03.alf.dec.com, for example), for access to NOTED over
    DECnet.  I just accessed NOTED::IBMPC-95 from Conferencing/NetNotes
through wros01.wro.dec.com over my TCP/IP RAS connection.

RE:-.1

I am using TCP/IP. I connect to my ISP and use the tunnel software to
connect through the firewall to Digital. I have tried several nodes as my
"Route through node" and still experience the problem with NOTED. Other
nodes seem to work fine. Actually, I am very surprised, because I am
writing this using netnotes! Generally at this time of day on a weekday, I
am unable to access any notesfiles on NOTED.

Have you tried connecting directly to noted.lkg.dec.com with no
route-through node ? I've been using NetNotes that way for at least a
year with no major problem with noted.
