2952.0. "IRQ 9 used by many devices ?" by WOTVAX::16.195.80.57::WorkBenchUser () Tue Jun 03 1997 16:59

I have an Pentium 200MMX with a Intel motherboard using the latest BIOS etc.

In this system I have a Adaptec 2940UW,a Matrox Mystique & a DE450 network
card. The motherboard BIOS is setup to Windiws 95 as a P&P operating system
and all works fine. I running OSR 2 of Windows 95.

I've just found that the adaptec, mystique and de450 cards are all associated
with IRQ 9 yet none say there is a conflict and they all appear to work
without any problems at all. I also have a 'IRQ Holder for PCI steering'
associated with IRQ 9

I was wondering if anyone could clarify why all three of these PCI cards
report using IRQ 9 and do not say there is a conflict.

Pete

There would only be an IRQ conflict if multiple edge-triggered
interrupt devices attempted to share an IRQ. If the devices all allow
sharing, namely they use level interrupts, then there is no conflict
    and everything works.

Supposed to be one of the wonders of PCI.

One of the supposed non-wonders of PCI is that something (like the
BIOS?) will assign IRQs to PCI devices, even if they don't want or need
    one... like a graphics card.

Re .-1:

Bad example in this case, Mystique needs an interrupt if you enable bus
mastering. Here's an extract from the README with the latest driver release:

- Matrox Mystique Bus Mastering

The Matrox Mystique supports bus mastering, which accelerates the 3D
frame rate of Mystique bundled games and many Direct3D programs on
the market. To access the bus mastering check box, click "PowerDesk"
on the MGA Settings property sheet.

Some early PCI systems may not properly assign an interrupt (IRQ) to
your graphics card. If your graphics card doesn't have an IRQ, bus
mastering can't be used. You can test for bus mastering support by
running the MGA Diagnostic program, available in MGA PowerDesk folder.
