2928.0. "WIN 95 on Personal Workstation 200i ?" by QDOV01::BHARGAVI () Mon May 19 1997 09:23

Hi,

Can you please tell me whether we can run WIN 95 on Personal Workstation
200i which uses the Intel Pentium chip ?

This is a query by one of our prospective customers who is buying about 100
workstations with WIN NT.

If not what can be the reason ?

regards

2928.12001 uses Pentium Pro cpuCPCOD::CODYMon May 19 1997 14:457
        I have that workstation it uses the Pentium Pro chip not the Pentium
    chip. Now I believe the difference is the Pro chip is a true 32 bit
    chip and running software with 16 bit code such as Win95 slows the
    system. If your customer needs windows 95 instead of NT then they
    should use a non-pro cpu.

    But it's still faster than a standard Pentium. A good portion of WIN95
    is 32 bit, as are many of the applications. I'd take a 200 MHz PPRO any
    day over a 200 MHz Pentium.... for anything except DOS based games.
    Even there, it's as fast as a P166... you'll never notice.

    No reason not to use it, unless there's some other incompatibility.

    Customers should be buying Pentium-Pros for future upgrading, either to
    NT4.0 or NT5.0, from Win95.  The Pentium 200s are only about $400
    cheaper than a similiarly equipped Pentium Pro 200, and the Pro has a
    much (1 year or more) longer time before it will be "slow", etc.

    Only my opinion, but I wouldn't throw good money after bad, the
    pentiums are getting very long toothed.

    Windows95 will work fine on a PWS200i... the only thing to
    worry about are graphics-related (namely, does Acell and
    Intergraph have Win95 drivers, Direct3D, etc, and are they
    supported).

    RE:.3 PPro is socket type 8. This is a dead-end. No follow on chips.
    Pentium II is socket type 7. A system with socket type 7 will be able
    to upgrade to faster chips when available. I found this out after I
    bought my clone with PPro. Just as well. I won't be upgrading for
    a while now.

    Pentium II is "Slot 1", which probably will have an upgrade path, but
    it will be strictly Intel, I am sure...
