2906.0. "Pentium Pro and Win95 950B" by NNTPD::"luraschi@mail.dec.com" (Luraschi Carlo) Thu Apr 17 1997 09:26

Hello,
a customer of mine has a Venturis 6200GL (Pentium Pro 200) with Win95
version 950B.
From DOS windows he made a MEM /C and noted that HIMEM had a size of
27K instead of the usual 1.2K
He also noted that the size of HIMEM changes if he has loaded or not
DISPLAY (without loading DISPLAY the HIMEM size increase by the dimension
of DISPLAY)
He has checked for virus with negative resoult and has tried to
reinstall from scratch but the strange behaviour persist.
The same problem was present on another Pentium Pro 200 and he has
solved the problem installing the version 950A of Win95.
I have a Win95 version 950B on my PC and HIMEM size is regular but my
PC isn't a Pentium Pro.
Anyone know a problem with Pentium Pro and Win95 version 950B or have
any other idea that can help me???

   Thanks
         Carlo

I believe this is a know bug in the non-US versions of Win95 OSR2.

I think loading HIMEM.SYS from the US-Version would cure it (but you
    get English messages from it).

Hi,
  thanks for the suggestion.
The customer has tried HIMEM from an American version without
good resoult.
He also tried with HIMEM from an 950A version but the problem is
still present.
He investigated among his customers and found the same problem on
various PCs, not only on Pentium Pro et not only on Digital PCs (he
found the same problem on IBM and Clone PCs).

  Any other idea ??

  Thanks

re .2: I'm sorry about the misinformation I gave in .1 - I checked and
the culprit is IO.SYS and not HIMEM.SYS. But the symptom is that
HIMEM.SYS appears to take too much space. It can be cured by using the
US English version of IO.SYS. The second link also contains a patch for
    non-US versions.

There is an official MS patch available to fix this problem.
