2858.0. "DE500 hangs WIN95 loading if network goes away" by GIDDAY::ANDREASEND () Wed Mar 19 1997 06:26

Hi team,

I have discovered that WIN95 will not complete loading if
the twisted-pair cable is pulled out of the back of the
DE500 card. The PC is configured to log onto a WindowsNT domain.
It offers the three-field logon screen and then you get an hourglass
indefinitely. If the PC is then reconnected to the network, you subsequently
get a "No Domain controller is available etc" message and WIN95 completes
loading. The problem is not PC-model specific

You might ask why would I want to pull the RJ45 cable out??? Well,
my customer has a two-PC network connected with a direct-connected,
twisted-pair cable, crossed, like in the DE500 manual.

They want to ensure that the WIN95 machine will still load WIN95 if the
domain controller is switched off. Currently this does not happen.
It seems that we need to have power to both DE500 adapters for the WIN95
client to load.

I tried a different driver. After much angst and gnashing of teeth I
got WIN95 to run a DE500.SYS V2.6 rather than the generic DC21X4.SYS
that WIN95 kindly auto-loads. What a process for no result.

So I tried a DE450 card and the problem went away. WIN95 loads it
as a 21041 -based adapter rather than a 21140 based DE500 (I think
it still loads the same generic driver DC21X4.SYS anyway ?)

Using the DE450, WIN95 will still load if the Direct-connected PDC is
switched off or the cable is pulled out of the PC. This is what the
customer wants. So we'll tell them to buy DE450s.

Any thoughts on what might be wrong with the DE500 or WIN95 driver???

Thanks,

Shayne Andreasend

2858.2Pull 2.7 kit and follow readme.txtNETCAD::HILLERThu Mar 20 1997 00:1615
You need to pull down the V2.7 kit (as mentioned in the previous note)
and following the directions in the Win95 directory to install the
driver. In summary, you need to do the following:

    1. In the network control panel, remove the DE500 adapter.
    2. Exit the network control panel but do not reboot yet!!!
    3. Insert the V2.7 kit in the floppy and run A:setup
    4. From the O/S menu select Windows 95 and hit install.
    5. When complete, exit ezworks and reboot the computer.

On the next boot, the DE500 adapter should be detected and the
DE500.SYS driver should be automatically installed.

and the new driver 2.7 did not fix the problem! I followed the
instructions exactly.

WIN95 still waits indefinitely after NT domain login screen if
twisted-pair cable is pulled out of card...

Should I QAR? If so how do I do this?

Cheers,

    Hi Shayne,

You're clearly working on some other issue, but is the above normal
operating procedure for you or your customer?

    I'm baffled,

2858.6Try forcing the speedNETCAD::HILLERThu Mar 20 1997 17:3019
    Shayne,

I recreated your problem today and it looks to be a Windows 95
problem more than a DE500.SYS problem. When set to autosense mode, the
DE500.SYS driver monitors the cable status. If the system attempts to
send a packet while the cable is not present, the driver returns a no
cable status. It appears that Windows 95 is just continually retrying
rather that eventually failing. For a workaround, try forcing the card
through the network control panel to 10 Mb/ Half Duplex. When the
adapter is forced to a speed, the driver will try to send the packet
regardless of whether or not a cable is connected. A different status
will be returned rather than the no cable status and hopefully Win. 95
    will deal with this better.

    Hope this helps.

2858.7Good workaroundGIDDAY::ANDREASENDThu Mar 20 1997 20:0222
Re .6 - Brent, thanks for the workaround, forcing the speed
to 10Mb / Half Duplex on the DE500 was successful. It caters for the worst-case
scenario, that being if the PC at the other end of the direct-connect
twisted pair cable is switched off. However this customer is very fussy
and wants cards that plug in and go - hence making a single configuration
change is too much for them... So I am recommending the customer go with the
DE450 which does that. Is the DE450 going to be available for couple
of years?

Re .5 Bill, yes it is an unusual configuration. The company is preparing
to roll out pairs of direct-connected computers to many parts of the state of
New South Wales. This contrasts with a "normal" configuration where the PC
would connect to a repeater so the PC would be able to load WIN95 OK if the
domain controller had gone away.
This is my first encounter with two PCs directly connected with a crossed,
twisted pair cable. To answer your question, pulling the cable out of the
network card seems to be the same as if the other machine were switched off.
The customer simply wanted the client machine to be able to enter WIN95 and/or
reboot if the server machine were switched off.

Many thanks, Shayne

    Shayne,

Thanks for the detailed and well-reasoned explanation of why the
cable might act as if unplugged. I appreciate your taking the time to
    explain.

    Cheers,
