2843.0. "Baffling device conflict" by SANITY::LEMONS (And we thank you for your support.) Wed Mar 12 1997 16:05

    Hi

I installed a DE203 EtherWORKS Ethernet card in my home PC (a
VenturisFP). I used Windows 95 Device Manager to select available IRQ,
I/O and memory settings, then used the latest EtherWORKS NICSETUP
utility to configure the Ethernet card to these available settings.
After power cycling, I find that the Ethernet card does work, but my
sound card does not. Instead of hearing that few seconds of music just
before the desktop appears, I hear, say, one note. Also, other
applications that need the sound cards ability to generate music no
longer produce music. Oddly, I can still play and hear CDROMs that I
    put in the CDROM drive.

I've checked and triple-checked the Device Manager for conflicts, and
don't find any, either for the Ethernet card or the sound card.

Does it sound like introducing the Ethernet card has created a device
    resource conflict?

If so, where should I go from here to debug this?

    Thanks!

Not so odd on the CD - you're only using the card as an amplifier and
mixer (no digital data required for Red Book audio from the CD).

What happens if you start Win95 without the network?

I had the same experenice when I installed a Linksys Ethernet card.
This PNP PCI card bumped my PNP sound cards MIDI port. The driver
for the sound card complained about a conflict at bootup but the
device manager said there was no conflict. There was another
available IRQ which had the same problem. I wound up pulling a
second SCSI card and asigning it that IRQ in the device manager. It
now works.

I think the problem is it tried to assign the IDE IRQ which is
unused in my SCSI PC.

While booting, press F8 as soon as the "Starting Windows 95" message
appears. You'll get a list of boot options... select "Safe Mode".

Have you tried following the suggestions in the Hardware Conflict
Troubleshooter? Go, Start -> Help -> then type "Hardware Conflict
Troubleshooter"

The troubleshooter topics in the online Help can be very useful sometimes.

Dennis.

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll give them a shot.

Another item: my graphics adapter's options (IRQ, etc.) have what
appears to be a tiny blue exclamation mark next to them. What does
    this mean?

    Thanks!

Are you looking at the "resource settings" under Device Manager for the
graphics card? When I look at the same page I see something that looks
like a blue 8-pin SOJ (ie: a chip package) to the left of each
parameter - not an exclamation mark...
