2831.0. "Icons for devices in Windows Explorer" by TUXEDO::FRIDAY (DCE: The real world is distributed too.) Thu Mar 06 1997 14:14

When you're in the Windows Explorer, there are small icons for the
various devices that are shown. Where are these icons, and how
are they associated with the various devices? I've looked through
the registry and failed to find any mention of them (although I
could have missed them of course). Nor could I find them by exploring
a large number of menus and applets.

The reason I'm asking is because of something mysterious that happened
to me a few nights ago.

I was in the Explorer, busy copying a bunch of icons and related
files to my ZIP drive. At some point the icon for the ZIP drive
changed from the usual tiny blue "picture" of a ZIP drive to
something else, an icon that I think was in one of
the files I was copying to the ZIP drive.

I was unable to figure out how to restore the regular ZIP
drive icon. But luckily when I rebooted the problem fixed
    itself.

    Can anyone offer an explanation?

    Thanks in advance,
       Rich

The icons are a special kind of shortcut called a device shortcut. I haven't
found an obvious way of creating one directly, but it's easy enough to copy
one from the "My Computer" window.

Ok, I can believe they're a special kind of shortcut.
But how do you get to see their definition/properties?

    I believe they're in SHELL32.DLL.

Your changing icon is a known bug in Windows 95 (and NT 4.0). There is
an icon cache that messes up every so often and gives the wrong icon
for a device in explorer. I see it all the time. As for fixing it -
    reboot!
