2792.0. "A plethora of Schedulers!" by ROCKS::KEANE () Wed Feb 12 1997 08:38

    Hi,

    Please can you help me.

    I am trying to do the "right" thing by my Win95 office PC, running Sweep,
    disk utilities, tape backups, etc etc, at regular defined intervals.

    I now find that I have the following independent scheduling programs
    running tasks at various times:-

    Sweep
    Colorado Backup
    Alta Vista Indexer
    MS fast find indexer
    System Agent (Disk utilities)

    It is getting very hard to juggle all the various times on the various
    schedulers so as not to get a clash, e.g. a disk scan at the same time
    as a backup!

    Is it possible to consolidate all these scheduled tasks, and run them
    under the control of ONE scheduling program?

    If so which scheduler?

    Is it possible to get the scheduler to turn off screen savers before
    running other utilities, and back on when they have finished? How?

    advice gratefully received

    Patrick

 I have removed all scheduling from my systems, except for the System Agent;
 the Agent has a single schedule windows. The only problem I know of is
 that Sweep will always terminate with an exception error AFTER is completes
 its task.

2792.2how do you run Sweeo under system agent?ROCKS::KEANEWed Feb 12 1997 11:2215
    hi Bruce,

    How do you run Sweep from System Agent??

    When I try, I can get System Agent to run Sweep, I then get the Sweep
    GUI on the desktop, it Sweeps memory, but doesn't start sweeping disks
    until the "Go" button is pressed. I cannot find a Command line
    interface or paraeter to cause it to fully run. I believe that the CLI
    has been removed from the later versions.

    What do you do about the other schedules such as MS fast find etc?

2792.3to run sweep from the agent, my command line isFIEVEL::FILGATEBruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452Wed Feb 12 1997 13:2410
"c:\program files\sophos sweep\sweep95.exe" -i -auto

where the " are to support the embedded spaces in the directory names,
-i is for immediate, and -auto I do not remember. These are explained
over in the security conference somewhere. These two switches kick
sweep off running immediately and prevent it from being stopped until
complete.

    Works great!

    Now how about Colorado backup? (and fast find and Alta Vista indexer)?

    Any other offers from anyone?

	Altavista Indexer seems to work with

	"C:\Program Files\DIGITAL\AltaVista Search\
	Private eXtension\pav_pancho.exe" -safull

	...whatever it means. Found it in the readme-file while
	I was wondering why I could't get on-line with my
	Exchange server-based folders while Altavista Indexer was
	running.

2792.6I dont like Indexers behaviour either!ROCKS::KEANEMon Feb 24 1997 12:5117
    re .5

     I have since stopped using the Altavista indexer for that reason!....

    If the Indexer is running but even not actively indexing, it appears it
    holds ALL the directories open, and nothing else is allowed access.
    Both Backup and MS exchange, complain "Files are in use by another
    user".

    Screws up remote use of exchange and my overnight backup!

    cheers
