2773.0. "common dial-up setup for multiple users with individual profiles" by LNZALI::BACHNER (Mouse not found. Click OK to continue) Fri Jan 31 1997 11:50

On a Windows95 PC with a few users (each of them having his own profile), I'd
like to define some common dial-up connections. At least, I'd like to create a
common set of dial-up connections - it would be nice if users could individually
set up additional connections.

So far, I've found no way to do this. If I create a shortcut from one of the
connections into a common menu, this entry can't be used by other users (they
get a message close to "connection not found, please double click on New
Connection").

Any idea how to achieve this ?

Thanks for your help,
Hans.

PS: while we are at this topic - is it possible to transfer dialup connection
definitions from one PC to another (similarly configured) PC ? sort of an
export/import function ?

When I do this, I create the dial-up connection and put a shortcut to it in my
start menu. Once I have the bugs weeded out I open the profiles folder in the
`win95' folder and copy the shortcut from one profile to the others.

Your start menu is nothing magic, just a collection of shortcuts in folders
below the profiles folder. This is why you get an explorer window to work on
them in `advanced' mode.

re .1: Yes, but the dialup connections folder is special. It is not really a
folder on disk, but rather a magic set of stuff in the registry that is keyed
to individual users.

I do what you suggest in .1 for applications, but I've had exactly the same
experience as .0 with dialup connections.

Obligatory rant: Ok, so the dialup connections are per user, but then why the
heck are the Explorer Favorite Places common among all users? Ditto documents
on the start menu!!!!!! Bah.

I haven't needed to use this so I can't vouch for function, but it
    might be worth the look.
