2765.0. "Sound Problems" by WHOS01::BOWERS (Dave Bowers, NSIS/IM) Mon Jan 27 1997 13:09

    My daughter's system (Dell P75, W95) has developed a strange problem
    with sound. Program-generated sounds (MS Dinosuars, Encarta) work fine,
    but the media player cannot play MIDI files (.wav files work) and CD
    audio is not working (even through the earphone jack).

    Were it not for the MIDI problem, I'd conclude that the audio circuits
    in the CD-ROM were shot.

    Any ideas? Could it be a S/W problem? The problem is urgent, as the
    poor child cannot do her homework without Pearl Jam ;^)

CD audio come thru a separate cable from the CD drive to the sound card.
You might check that the cable is seated properly.

I don't know about Dell, but some systems have a sound control where you
can mute selected inputs. You can try clicking on the sound Icon on the
control bar and see if you can find any "mute" buttons.

    I believe that any CD Audio automatically mutes as a self defense
    measure, when Pearl Jam gets placed in it.

2765.4WIN95 driver may be muting the audioMSBCS::DELBROCCOSun Feb 02 1997 13:468
    On my DIGITAL Celebris FP590, with Philips 2X CD-ROM, the WIN95
    generic driver essentially mutes the audio. I have yet to find
    replacement bits to turn it back on. In fact, the CD-ROM has become
    very finnicky about which CD-ROMs it will read and which ones it will
    not.  Perhaps it's just a co-incidence.

    It previously worked fine for audio and data under Windows for Workgroups.
