2762.0. "Modem freezes" by POLAR::SCHILDKRAUT (Don't seal home.... Share it!) Sat Jan 25 1997 19:57

A new problem on my machine, i believe it's Win95 problem...

About a month ago i nuked my hard drive and re-installed Win95 et all.
Ever since, my modem sporativally just quits transfering. Everything
will be going just fine, then out of the blue, no more transfers, yet
i'm still connected. To make sure, i try pinging or check for mail or
something, but the modem status doesn't show any data moving, or
anything. I've tried leaving it, but it won't clear itself. I have to
log off then back on. There's no pattern to it either, happens on the
web, mail, news, after one minute or one hour.

    Computer's a 486, Dx/100, 12mg Ram, modem's a 14,4... ISDN pack
installed (it was before too without problems)... original win95 update
with SP1, Kernel Update and ISDN pack (problems's there with and
    without the ISDN pack).

    Thanks in advance,

    al

Al, you didn't mention what type of modem you have. There have been quite extensive
discussions elsewhere of a similar sounding issue with US Robotics modems. One thing to
try, which I've done to help handle a similar problem with my USR modem is to add a line
into the setup properties. Open Dial-Up Networking, then right click on one of your dial
up connections (the change will impact all of them). Click on the Configure button, below
the box that show the modem that you're using. Click on the Connection Tab and then on
the Advanced button at the bottom of the resulting window. In the next window there will
be a field that say Extra Settings. Put in S12=0 and then OK out of all windows. What
this does is set a timer delay in your modem to 0. The modem "listens" for possible audio
traffic and occasionally mistakes line noise for such traffic and gets hung up in trying
to stop everything else to allow the false audio through. The S12 register tells the
modem how long to back off into this listening mode. Try it, it might help your problems.

Oooops. It's a Zoltrix 14,4 that's going to be replaced VERY shortly.
