the new file from USR and will try to install it this weekend.

| I'm building a new system and installed a USR 33.6 modem a few days
ago, and ignored it while I brought up other hardware. Now I've gone
back and had Win95 redetect it, and I'm trying to get it to read the
new drivers off the cdrom that came with the modem.
The only way I seem to be able to get to the screen with the "Have
Disk" button is to not accept the hardware Win95 detects and click on
"Change". So I get to the next screen, select the USR 33.6 and click
on "Have Disk". Then I enter my cdrom drive letter. Instead of
reading the new drivers, it bounces me back to the select-hardware
screen with two DEC modems as my choices?? This isn't a DEC machine,
and all the software is my own, so I don't know where this came from.
All I want to do is get my new drivers read off the cdrom. This has to
be simpler than what I'm experiencing.

| There are entries for DEC modems in the USR .INF file, since some DEC modems are
really USR.
Note that there are no "drivers" for modems - rather, you provide W95 with
a description of the modem's capabilities - that's what's in the .INF file.
Go to the Control Panel Modems applet, remove the modem it has defined now,
and click on Add, tell it not to select from a list and click on Have Disk.
The .INF file should then allow you to select the proper modem type.

Tony: try using the BROWSE button to drill down to the directory with
the .inf file for the modem, instead of simply typing in a drive
letter...

| Thanks Steve and Dave for the clarification and suggestions. I'll try
again tonight. Last night it kept me in the same old loop of selecting
a modem and not reading the .inf file. I must be doing something dumb,
so I'll try a few variations.

Hi,
Just to continue from my base note, in a slightly different
direction, what happens if you have a INTERNAL no-name modem
using a Rockwell chip set at 33600bps, what would you
modify to get this to operate at 33600, if no drivers
were supplied.
The reason I ask is that I had this originally and this is
why I changed over to the USR, which is now working fine by the way.

| Basically, you'll have to find out the correct section in the .INF
files, and make a duplicate of the canned response for 28800 and change
28800 to 33600 (and better make one for 31200 too, or it won't connect
at that speed).
On NT 4.0 TAPI, you'd need to reinstall the modem because it uses
precompiled .INF files. On Windows 95, I believe modifying the .INF
file should suffice (if not, redetect the modem).
