Not really a blues singer as such, but I didn't know where else to
    stick this:

Can anyone confirm the rumour that Lavern Baker died last week?

  RE: LaVern Baker

  I second that confirmation.

The Boston Globe did an excellent writeup, worth seeking out if you can
  (web accessible?).

Tom Parmenter also issued a lament via desperado, which was well-taken...
But, I thought, a little too apologetic about her early hits -- Tweedlee
Dee, Jim Dandy, I Cried a Tear, etc. True, they don't begin to reflect
the true extent of her talent, but they aren't "trash".

I thought the Globe writer (probably Steve Morse) had an interesting point
-- "I Cried a Tear" actually foreshadowed a type of 60s soul performance.

The Globe notes a lot of fascinating things about her career -- her many
different talents, her afflictions, the way she managed to miss
a golden opportunity for fame by entertaining American troops rather than
touring with Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, etc.
She was the 1st or 2nd woman into the R&R hall of fame, and all that.

After reading the Morse piece, I had a much better appreciation.... - Jay
