1046.0. "Anti-virus software & disk defrag for Windows NT 4.0" by CHOWDA::GLICKMAN (writing from Newport,RI) Wed May 07 1997 17:58

Can you use any Anti-virus software for Windows NT 4.0 on an
    AlphaServer 4100?

Also, what about a disk defrager?

    Thanks.

Check Thunderbyte for antivirus. Based on messages CCS has sent,
Norton will be available on Alpha in the Aug/Sep 97 timeframe.

www.execsoft.com has Diskeeper. An evaluation copy can be downloaded.

    re .1

I looked at Thunderbyte and didn't see any reference to Alphas...

What are people doing about AlphaServers and security protections?

I looked at IBM AntiVirus as well... no reference to Alpha!

Well, if you play it right, you can make an argument that Alpha
is far less susceptible to viruses than the Intel architecture,
and therefore doesn't need the same level of protection.

Can you explain what you mean alittle more? Is it true that Alpha
is far less susceptible to viruses than Intel? Doesn't that mean its
about the hardware and not the software? I am having a hard time
getting that point and I have a customer with a 4100 running Windows
NT 4.0 with AltaVista Intranet that I want to protect...

    Thanks for the input.

Well, for example, the classic x86 boot sector virus is of little
concern to Alpha users. Note that x86 PC's can generally be set up
to avoid booting from floppy, but the mechanism is still there.

Obviously, Alpha is susceptible to macro viruses that infect
Word/Excel documents, viruses that attack via the OS thru backdoors
(unprotected accounts, tcp/ip ports, ActiveX, etc).
