238.0. "Status/future of HSM" by RYNGET::BASHA () Wed Jun 04 1997 12:11

    Hello,
    What's the status of the HSM product?
    Is it currently in maintenance/support mode only?
    What are the plans in this area? Would we have a successor product?

    If there are notes in this or in other conferences discussing
    this, please give me a pointer.

    We have a couple of systems using HSM, and I'd like to know what
    support we can expect to get should something break. Also, we need to
    do a couple of similar installations, and I'd like to know whether
    that's the way to go.

    Thanks a lot,
    Maria.

If my information is still right, then Polycenter HSM has been removed
from the official price guide, but can still be sold through the end of
this calendar year (using a special part number). Engineering is no
longer doing active development, but is doing support, including bug
fixes.

Let me get the official word on this, and I'll get back to you. I believe
the intent is to continue servicing trouble calls as long as there are
customers (or perhaps more accurately, customers with service contracts,
though I don't know of HSM customers without them).

We are not planning on issuing a "last" release, but there are several
updates to the current kit that are available -- I'll make sure these are
moved to our ftp site.

For mid-range systems, the successor is NetWorker HSM, which typically
uses tape, not optical, jukeboxes, though it could use optical. Drawbacks
are that it has a slower response time, it's visible to the user that a
file has been migrated, and files are migrated as a whole. But tape does
have a higher capacity than an optical platter, and a higher data transfer
rate. There's also a fair amount of integration with NetWorker backup.
The Notes conference that will be used for NetWorker HSM is the main
NetWorker conference, DECWET::NETWORKER.

For high-end solutions, there hasn't been a single answer -- these have
apparently been handled on a case by case basis. Craig Huber, the HSM
product manager, can give you more info on this. His e-mail address is
DECWET::HUBER.

That's a very hard question. Do they have to be compatible with your
current sites? If not, what sort of file sizes will they have, and
what total amount of data? Do they need fast response time? Will they
be updating files frequently, or will the data be mostly static once
it's written?
