1033.0. "Against IBM: how?" by VELENO::MICHIELI (Is IBM DEClining?) Mon Apr 07 1997 05:43

    Hi all,
    I've to compete against IBM/AIX.
My customer claims that AIX has an equivalent to AdvFS UTILITIES'
bundled with any systems, workstations or servers. This is not
comparable with our licencing scheme, where only server has this
licence include in NAS200. I've not a deep knoledge of AdvFS and the
Utilities, but my understanding is that a very limited capabilities are
    included with Digital UNIX.

My customer need at least to configure a 'multivolume', that is more
than one hard-disks for a filesystem, with a workstation like
AlphaStation 255. Is this possible without the UTILITIES licence? (I
    think no).

Further. Supposing the previous true, can I configure a multivolume by
means of the UTILITIES on some disks and then phisically 'move' these
disks under a system with only AdvFS ans 'see' these disks working like
a single filesystem? (My guess is yet no).

The customer also is a little bit concerned about the functional
capability of the AdvFS Utilities. He claims that the GUI is only
available with a workstation, but this licence is only available on
servers that usually dosen't have a graphics capability and not always
there is a workstation available as a 'display'. It seems that in order
to fully take advantages of the Utilities the customer must also have
or buy the graphic support (graphic card/monitor for server, or a
networked workstation). The only refernce on SPD is 'CDE Minimum
    Runtime Environment'! Is this true?

Please help me on answering to these questions, at least with some
pointers for further discussions or clarifications.

    Best regards,
     Gabriele - dtn 870-2203

1033.2GUI requires CDE, but...DECWET::DIPIETROMon Apr 07 1997 12:2822
The GUI runs only on a Digital UNIX box under CDE.

The GUI has a remote management capability, so can
run on any Digital UNIX box running CDE at the customer's
site. See the documentation to configure this.

If no suitable graphics head is available, then the
command line utilities will need to be used - they
work just fine.

Hi

I'm not aware that IBM has a defragmenter, nor expansion and
contraction by adding/removing volumes. IBM does not support
file system striping...

IBM does have a log based file system and it supports both
/ and non-root disks like we do.

I think IBM figured out how to add space to a file system back
when we were selling ULTRIX. Adding space to UFS isn't that
hard. We could it if we had elected to ship extendfs that
	came from OSF.

According to Digital UNIX note 9266, NAS isn't bundled with servers anymore.

UNIX Server Packaging Changes Coming in April
=============================================

In April, new packaging with UNIX AlphaServer systems will be implemented.

o Digital UNIX Unlimited user licenses will be bundled with the systems
Additionally, PrintExchange, Netscape Server and Java Runtime will
be bundled with systems. (NetWorker single server continues to
 	  be bundled with Digital UNIX.)

o NAS packages will NOT be bundled with new Digital UNIX AlphaServer
systems.

 	  Product NAS 200 Post April
 	  DECMSGQ yes line item software
 	  Objectbroker yes line item software
UNIX Server ext. yes part of Digital UNIX
NetWorker server yes part of StorageWorks
PLUS
 							software package (line
 							item software)
Adv. File System Util yes part of StorageWorks
 							Software packages (Line
 							item software)
Logical Storage Mgr yes part of StorageWorks
 							Software packages (Line
 							item software)

o Recommending StorageWorks Software packages to provide
leading storage solutions at the best prices in the market.

      Competitive Update:
 	This packaging accomplishes the following:
		- parity with other UNIX system vendors (ie, Sun bundles
unlimited user
licenses with the O/S and sells as line item software storage
mgmt tools)
		- delivers greater value by packaging the leading storage mgmt
software
		  tools at great prices

Sales Update will be online March 25. Price file implementation is April 7.
Marketing deliverables available over next 4-6 weeks.

You should look at the UNIX and Adv File System SPD's, but I
thought that the Multi-volume capability is licensed with Unix.

For defrag, undelete, GUI interface, and dynamic (?) change of
partitions you will need the AdvFS Utilities (which was part of NAS
200, and will be part of a 'StorageWorks' storage management software
    offering.

addvol/rmvol comes with the AdvFS Utilites and are licensed seperately.

How does this offering look like? To what systems will it be shipped/bundled
with? .. or does it need to be bought seperately?
