1030.0. "Customer advfs panic, then corruption" by NETRIX::"miller@gsg.dec.com" (Ken Miller) Tue Apr 01 1997 14:48

Hi,

I have a customer which is "casually" using advfs under DU V3.2G.
I say casually, because there's nothing fancy involved, and the
advfs utilities aren't even installed.

1. A few weeks ago, the customer started seeing his system occasionally
at the ">>>" prompt when he came in in the morning. Thru determined
detective work, he narrowed it down to "a" file on his advfs volume
that he used as a secondary backup. Whenever he tried to read this
file, the system panic'd.

2. Rather than call Digital, or take a system dump, he decided to
simply "rm" the file. The system panic'd in the process.

3. Upon reboot, the system will no longer "mount" the file system.

4. I asked him to run advscan, and possibly msfsck or vchkdir
but there are none present on his machine. Where can I find these
utilities compatible with V3.2G?

5. After finding references to advfs fixes in MP2 applicable to
V3.2G, it sounds like the customer really should be on MP2 for *any*
advfs use. Is this true, or am I over-reacting?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

msfsck and vchkdir are in the V3.2g kit and can be found in /usr/field.
I don't think verify (which is msfsck combined with vchkdir) and
    advscan existed until V4.0.

In cases where the system panics because of AdvFS you should also look
at the error log to see if there are any I/O errors on the disk
involved. I/O error messages from AdvFS are also displayed to the
    console.

I'm not familiar with the MP2 release so I don't know if there are any
relevant patches. Maybe someone who knows more about it can answer your
    question.
