    Hello managers,

last december, when we wanted to change to du-4.0a, we discovered a bug
within AdvFS, which was a "k.o.-criteria" for our upgrade-plans.

A Dec-Engineer (AdvFS development) could reproduce it, classified
it as a "showstopper" (whatever that *really* means) on 24-dec-1996 (!)
and told our TSC-germany on 14-jan-1997 that he has made the necessary
changes to the sources, will document it "now" and then a patch will be
    made available for us...

Now it's 2 months later and the above status is still the actual
    status.
Aside from the info that this patch will be integrated within 4.0D
(this was the reason why i asked for the timeline of 4.0D weeks
    ago...).

And our hope that there will be a patch (a new consolidated AdvFS?)
for the other 4.* versions has still not been fulfilled yet...

Meanwhile the number of installations that use 4.0* versions and the
MIDAS-package for astronomical data analysis increases steadily and so
does the number of users being confrontated with that bug...
(it shows up with the use of lseek and write)

What shall i do? Are there others waiting for such a patch?
    Shall i buy an HP-machine?
(I've heard they can handle partitions on disk now ;-)

    With regards,

    Bernt Christandl

1016.2Patch work in progressNETRIX::"tmark@zk3.dec.com"Tim MarkFri Mar 14 1997 13:575
The work to create patches for this problem is in progress. Reference QAR
51304 to monitor the progress. As Bob correctly stated, if this really were
an urgent problem for the customer, an IPMT case should have been opened.
As it apparently was not, the patch creation proceeds as it has.

Since, from subject of the message to the mailing list, the
customer did think this problem warranted an IPMT case, one
must wonder if the failure to turn into an IPMT was the
fault of the customer or the local CSC contact. I'd guess
that most customer doesn't know diddly about problem reporting
mechanisms, such as they are. Over the years it has been
fairly clear that many CSC don't seem to know much more about
	it.

Perhaps somebody vaguely official might want to let the
customer know that progress is being made, before they
	ask HP for a trade-in.

For myself, I'm going to mail in a documentation suggestion
	for the product as whole...
