1006.0. "Advfs and quotas - rw !! rq in /etc/fstab" by SIOG::TMCKEOWN () Wed Feb 19 1997 10:48

    I have a customer running DU V3.2D-2 with AdvFS and quotas. The file
    sets are mounted via /etc/fstab with entries rw,userquota,groupquota.
    (It was suggested to the customer to change from rq to rw in fstab(??))

    The customer is complaining that he gets no warning from passing the
    soft limit for a user - where should the message come to ? mail? user
    screen? console? Also what is the difference(correct way) to put
    entries
    in fstab??

    Thanks

You get exactly the same functionality whether you specify "rw" or "rq" in
/etc/fstab. We recommend "rw" because some people were getting confused and
were thinking that "rq" triggered quota usage. It does not. In Digital UNIX,
quota usage is triggered by the "userquota,groupquota" clause.

As far as not getting a warning goes, has the customer run vquotaon on the
fileset in question? You should do that every time you mount the fileset.
Older versions of AdvFS didn't require this but newer versions do. I don't
remember exactly when that rule went into effect but in any case it's a good
idea to get into the habit of running vquotaon (or "quotaon" in 4.x releases)
every time you mount a fileset with "userquota,groupquota" set in /etc/fstab.

1006.2Man page error?DECWET::BRADYThu Feb 20 1997 16:1812
    The man page for fstab(4) on 3.2C and 3.2G states:

    "rq Specifies that the file system is mounted with read-write access
          and quotas."

    The man page for fstab(4) on 4.0B states:

    "rq Specifies that the file system is mounted with read-write access."

    Looks like the 3.2x man page is wrong, correct?

Yes, the man pages related to quotas were cleaned up quite a bit in 4.0.
"rq" has never activated quotas in Digital UNIX (or OSF/1). This is because
the OSF specified that "userquota,groupquota" would. Any documentation to
the contrary is incorrect.
