999.0. "Panic "ftx_recovery_pass: bad log sts"" by COMICS::CORNEJ (What's an Architect?) Wed Feb 05 1997 14:57

This may sound strange, but I'm really entering this to see if anyone
    has any clues...

My customer has a 20Gb domain on an HSZ40 raid5 set. Several times
this domain has become corrupted and restored from tape. As they had
some spare disk capacity, the last time they did the restore, they did
it to a raid5 set on a SWXCR and kept the corrupted domain off line.
    This is Digital UNIX V4.0a.

Today I did a "verify oldproj_dom" on the corrupted domain. It reported
multiple errors (lost files, bitmap errors...). When the verify had
stopped, I wanted to capture the errors (they had flown past the screen
too quickly) so did another verify on the same domain. A different set
of errors scrolled past but before we could capture them, the system
paniced (ftx_recovery_pass: bad log sts). On reboot, it paniced and
paniced until we forced it up into single user.

We finally realised that the panic on boot was caused by the S53advfsd (we
had removed ALL mounts from /etc/fstab other than root and usr).

We did a verify of each domain in /etc/fdmns and when we touched the
"live" project_domain (a restore of the one earlier), the system
paniced again. Mounting this domain also caused the panic and all
panics were identical. We have not yet managed to get a dump as
priority went to finding the backup tapes. It is a secure environment
and I can't touch the keyboard.

Because this customer has had a history of corrupted domains, he has
reverted back to UFS for this critical data.

OK - now my question. Could my verify of the corrupt domain have
corrupted another domain. The system had been running for 4 weeks
prior to today with no problems other than several disk errors had been
logged a couple of days previously, but the filesystem had not complained.

You need to enter a cld to get a fix for the problem you are
seeing. When you do so, you would need to also give us a
crash dump and the log for the domains that paniced.
You can save the log by using the vfile command, see the
vfile manpage for syntax.

As to your question: "Could my verify of the corrupt domain have
corrupted another domain", the answer is no. The verify utility
has no functionality that would cause it to corrupt one domain
after running on another domain.

    Thanks Arti,

The dump is a no-no - this is a secure site and nothing leaves it on
magnetic media (they crush the dead disks). I'm still trying to get a
    crash data file!

Can vfile get things back from this domain without crashing it? The
customer has already had 8 hours downtime (mostly restoring the data)
and isn't too keen to crash again.

999.3shouldn't cause a panic...NETRIX::"arti@slugbt.zso.dec.com"Arti KumarFri Feb 07 1997 18:0112
Jc,

1. Running vfile should not cause another panic as the vfile utility
looks at the disk before its mounted.
2. Run the vfile utility after boot before mounting the domain.
3. It would be nice to get more information on the crash in terms of
the crash-data file and/or the crash dump. The log file that the
vfile utility captures would also give us useful information, even
if you are not able to get the crash dump. I wonder if they would allow
an electronic transfer of the crash dump if they don't allow a magnetic
one?

    Thanks Arti,

I would like to try (1) and (2), but the customer does not want to
risk the down-time. While this is not a 24x7 operation, it is close.
They have already suffered several fatal corruptions that necesitated
    going back to tape.

I have managed to extract the crash-data files (they are all identical,
one has been sent to the UK CSC).

The Military are very sensative about crash dumps. Getting the
crash-data was hard enough. These machines do not connect to the
network. We could only get the dump if the problem could be reproduced
on a non classified system (we have the system, but not the non
    classified data:-).

Even if we could get the access to the logfile from vfile, I'm not
sure we could convince their security folk that it contains no
classified data (they read the crash-data file before releasing it!).

Here's a copy of the crash-data file. I don't know what you'll be able to
deduce with just this, but that's all we're allowed to have. I'll be raising
an IPMT today, referencing this note.

Well, CANASTA turned up another customer that reported a similar
problem on 10/96 for V4.0A. Case was worked. Thought to have happened
when the system mounted an Advfs domain that had become corrupted.

Unfortunalty, the case was closed because the customer never got back
    to the CSC.

When we say we entered it into CANASTA. We do it to capture the PANICS,
we usally don't do the research. Which I did on this.
