| Answered my own question. For the possible benefit of other hams, here's
the fix - and explanation.
The back of the DECpc 450ST has (among others) three connectors:
9-pin D with two arrows drawn over it; manual describes it as
"Serial Comm Port"
9-pin D with a printer drawn over it; manual describes it as
"Serial Printer Port"
15-pin D Labeled "Parallel Printer Port"
I've been trying to make the "Serial Comm Port" talk to my radio. Last
night out of desperation I connected to the Serial Printer Port and my
radio software took off.
The FT-8500 is completely programmable by your PC, using the Windows
program that comes with the ADMS-2 PC interface kit. Last night, in just
a few minutes I programmed in various VHF repeaters, UHF repeaters,
marine frequencies and public service freqs, all arranged in memory banks
by specific classifications. Splits, subaudible tones, even specific
transmitter power out settings (the 8500 lets you pick from three
different output power levels); alphanumeric names for repeaters and ps
freqs; nine telephone numbers to autodial, with alphanumeric names;
spectrum analyzer range, spacing, spread...
Neat stuff.
