2244.0. "SLS Database Convert" by CHEFS::RAVEN () Mon Apr 21 1997 12:34

During the upgrade from V2.4A to V2.8A , I understand some databases are
converted into a new format. Would it be possible to perform this convert
outside of the upgrade process.

Its a long story....

The magazine database (sls$master:sls$magazine_master_file.dat) format
was changed between V2.4A and V2.5. Even the upgrade doesn't perform
a conversion, you have to re-establish the database using STORAGE commands
for magazines.

So if we dont use Tape magazines, I dont need to do anything?

The normal tapedatabase and access to database files do not change? .....
SLS$ROOT:[PRIMAST]TAPEMAST.DAT and SLS$ROOT:[PARAMS]VALIDATE.DAT

In that case If I dont use Tape Magazines why am I having to worry about mixing
V2.4A clients with a V2.8A database or V2.8A/V2.4A clients with a V2.4A database
?????

I have just started work on the following to avoid having to a big bang approach
upgrade ...I.E. upgrade 100 + client and the server from V2.4A to V2.8A....to
be told that they incompatibale dur to database changes.
Now I read that the tape database does not get converted?

My approach is to take the V2.4A database ...copy it to a twin V2.4A server
upgrade the V2.4A server (With the copied database) and as we upgrade clients
from V2.4A to V2.8A repoint them to the other database.

Our ops dont use SLS to keep track of free/allocated tapes, so if the tape
databases our out of synch for a while then its not so important.

However if the above is true and I can mix V2.4A and V2.8A !
