2504.40Baby vs Full?hndymn.zko.dec.com::MCCARTHYA Quinn Martin ProductionThu Mar 06 1997 10:057
I've been looking at the jinco web page and see that they
have "Mother board size" listed as either "baby" or "full". Since I've only
looked inside a few PCs in my life, and most of them appeared to have
the same size MB, what have I been looking at - Baby or Full? An example
of what I've been looking at would be a Celebris FP Desktop system.

Neither. The Digital systems usually, though not always, use slightly
    non-standard motherboard sizes.

Most systems today use "baby" format motherboards. Older systems, and
some higher power systems (PPRO, etc) may use full MB's. Many of the
newest systems are going to the new ATX format boards - less
interference between the CPU/memory and the I/O cards.

None of the above will fit in the Digital PC's.

Why does this not surprize me :-(

Thanks. I'm actually "off the clock" today trying to decode all this stuff
as the Digital-owned PC at home will need to return to work and I'll need
to replace it (and I'm planning on starting from scratch).

    Hi Brian,

If you want the latest and greatest, go with an ATX motherboard/case
combo. If you want maximum compatibility with most current boards, get
a "standard" clone enclosure. They'll usually be able to handle baby
or 3/4 or larger motherboards. That's what I've done since my early
excursion into PCs with a Tandy DECstation DS320.

    Cheers,

    /Bill

And if you want a PPRO system, use -only- an ATX combo, or you will
find many of your expansion slots blocked by a large chunk of heat sink
    on the CPU...

Were there actually any motherboards listed as "Full"? I think that was the size
of the original AT. I have not seen any in quite a while.

Many of the early PPRO boards, especially the dual processor ones, are
full size. They are still available. I've had 2 or 3 other full size
motherboards in my systems over the last few years...I think I just
sold off the last one a few months ago...

    re: PPRO

PPRO MB's are usually sold as case, power supply, MB and Chip, due
to the config and power differences over std Pentiums.
