2907.0. "Strange floppy problems under Windows95." by IOSG::HARDIE () Fri Feb 07 1997 07:47

I'm experiencing some strange problems with reading files under Windows95
from the floppy drive on my PC at home and was hoping that someone maybe
able find my problem.

Recently I upgraded the motherboard and graphics card on my PC going from a
VLB setup (Intel 486) to a PCI setup (AMD K5).

I installed Windows95 from floppy all appeared to be fine.

The other day I downloaded a self-extracting ZIP file from the net at work
and took it home. I copied this to my hard-drive and ran it. A load of CRC
errors were reported, originally I thought it was the file, but eventually
came to the conclusion (after trying the disk on 2 other PCs and not
experiencing any problems) that the floppy drive was broken. I then bought
another floppy drive and this experienced the same problems. So I decided
it was the on-board floppy controller and tried the old one from my original
PC, same problem.

I then decided to try it from DOS and not Windows95 and the file extracted
fine. I've since tried loads of other floppies from Windows95 and all
experience the same problem, but all are fine under DOS.

Also if I copy the files to my hard drive from DOS and then run them from
Windows95 I don't have any problems either.

As I'm completely out of ideas as to what the problem could be I was hoping
someone may have some ideas as to what I could try next.

Thanks,

Neil

I had lots of problems with my floppy and W95 during the beta phase
(about which I was in intensice correspondence with MS).

I tried three different controllers but it didn't help. The drive runs
perfectly under DOS (and NT FWIW). The problem was never solved, and I
have given up... I can run it fine under W95 if I use the 16-bit
    driver.

Ah well, looks like I'll have to upgrade to NT or dig out some
    16-bit drivers.

    Thanks,

You can enable the 16-bit drivers by in W95 by removing the floppy from
the configuration in device mnager. Next time you boot, it'll use the
    16-bit driver.

The only major drawback is that if you're e.g. formatting a floppy,
not much else will run at the same time (good-bye multitasking).

And, BTW, I have used the same drive with two different motherboards
(same controller, same W95 system disk). The other one runs fine, so I
assume it could have something to do with the BIOS.

It may be unrelated but I had a conflict between my floppy controller
and my video card under Win95 (but not DOS). For the details see
the Win95 conference note 2445.*

    Thanks for the help.

I couldn't manage to remove the Windows95 driver for the floppy drive
as it kept reinstalling it when loading Windows95 (damn plug and play).
Removing it from the 'original configuration' didn't help either.

I did find a check-box labelled 'disable 32-bit drivers for all drives'
which did the trick, although not ideal this does fix the problem.

Thanks for the DMA conflict reference I'll have a look into this
    tonight.

    Thanks,
