792.14How do you disable DRVSPACE?VMSSG::FRIEDRICHSAsk me about Young EaglesTue Mar 18 1997 12:0216

    re .8 - DRVSPACE takes up lots of your 640K memory...

    I have been trying to get a game that runs in conventional memory to
    work and I found that DRVSPACE was getting loaded. I had previously
    used DRVSPACE on my disk, but I no longer am. However, DRVSPACE
    still gets loaded!

    How do I correctly turn it off? (I was able to disable it by
    renaming DRVSPACE.BIN) I could not find anything in the Options
    menu. Now that DRVSPACE is not getting loaded, I supposed I could
    delete DRVSPACE.INI if that is the right thing to do...

    Thanks,
    jeff

    I had the same problem. I solved it the following way.

    1/ Copy whatever you need from the compressed drive to the uncompressed
    drive.

    2/ Create a boot floppy, from which you remove DRVSPACE files

    3/ Boot from the floppy, and run the game.

    You'll need to experiment to discover what files need to be on the
    uncompressed drive, and what files also need to be on the floppy. But I
    did get it to work (and my sons thanked me :-}).

    Thanks.

    As I mentioned, I no longer run any compressed drives. However, it
    seems that if DOS finds DRVSPACE.BIN in the root directory, then it
    will load it automagically (there are no commands in CONFIG.SYS or
    AUTOEXEC.BAT to turn it on). Renaming/deleting DRVSPACE.BIN from the
    root directory certainly prevents this from happening, but I was
    wondering if there is a more graceful way of disabling it completely.

    Thanks,
    jeff

    Renaming DBLSPACE.BIN was the only way I could get rid of DBLSPACE, so
    I wouldn't be surprised if DRVSPACE is the same. It's loaded before you
    even get to CONFIG.SYS because that can be on the compressed drive.
    Once you've installed it, your only alternative might be to re-install
    DOS, and I'm not sure that does it if it's actually inserted into the
    MBR or something.

    There is. I had the same problem and solved without having to
    rename/delete DRVSPACE.BIN.  But I'm not sure I remember what I did :^)

    I either ran DriveSpace3 or got to it via properties on the disk -
    either way, there was a question or a box to tick to the effect of not
    loading DriveSpace on start-up. I think (but am not sure) there was a
    warning that I wouldn't be able to read compressed floppies (or
    something).

    Hope it helps, however vague it is :^)

792.19BOOTOPT.EXE can disable DRVSPACE loadingRDGENG::KOSKUBA_KThu Mar 20 1997 11:296
    Looking for another utility, I've stumbled upon BOOTOPT.EXE which
    enables you to easily setup boot options, one of which is to load/not
    load DBLSPACE or DRVSPACE. You can find in in 1996 archives in file
    v15n16.zip on http://www.pcmag.com/

792.20It's in MSDOS.SYSVIVIAN::RANCEhttp://vivian.hhl.dec.com/rance/Mon Mar 24 1997 11:2713
MSDOS.SYS is a Hidden, Read-Only file in your root directory.

Change the attributes to allow you to edit it
	ATTRIB -S -H C:\MSDOS.SYS

Then add the following lines in the section headed [Options]
	DRVSPACE=0
	DBLSPACE=0

Then set the attributes back to their original values
	ATTRIB +S +H C:\MSDOS.SYS

    Eh, like in the way that he doesn't understand that you can edit
    a binary file with the bootable operating system in it to
    change some text in there. I don't either.

    Not everybody runs Windoze-95...

    Rien.

792.24SMURF::PBECKWho put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop?Tue Mar 25 1997 04:465
    What binary file? MSDOS.SYS is a system, hidden file, but it's also
    a text file. It doesn't contain the operating system, it contains
    some options that control the booting of the operating system.

    MSDOS.SYS is a binary file in MS-DOS versions before 7. It is a text
    file in version 7 (which comes with Windows 95).
