2961.0. "Source compare program available?" by HELIX::WELLCOME (Steve Wellcome SHR3-1/C22 Pole A22) Tue Mar 25 1997 12:35

    Does anybody know of a shareware source compare program for windows
    more or less equivalent to the VMS differences command?

    Aha! Thanks. I'd overlooked that. Can't understand how, FC being
    such an obvious name....

    How about Windiff? (I'm not sure if a 16-bit Windows exists).

2961.4GNU Emacs has it (plus tons of other stuff)SMURF::PBECKWho put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop?Tue Mar 25 1997 16:3719
    I've seen a shareware upgrade to FC that had nicer features than the
    bundled version (if memory serves, the shareware fee, if paid, was
    donated to a charity). You might browse the usual archives. It's a
    DOS program.

    If you've got about 26M to spare, there's a W95 version of GNU Emacs
    19.34 that includes a lot of features (for 26M, it had better!),
    including (in the Tools menu)

    	Compare... two files
    		   two buffers
    		   three files
    		   three buffers
    		   two directories
    		   three directories

    I haven't tried any of these features, but if you got the space, and
    you like emacs, the price is right. Available through
    www.windows95.com.
2961.5Try to find VCOMPWKOL10::STETSONThink Digital Software!Mon Mar 31 1997 15:039
    One that I've used ALOT is called VCOMP. I don't have the ZIP kit or
    I'd post it for you. As previously suggested check the usual sources.

    The reason I like VCOMP is that you can do a split screen and see the
    file differences in color. GREAT APP!

    THANKS!!

2961.6Where to find it...WKOL10::STETSONThink Digital Software!Tue Apr 01 1997 21:3421
    re: .5

    I had a couple of notes back on this so I thought I'd better provide a
    little more detail.

    I did a search on the SIMTEL repository and found the program. The
    VCOMP stands for Visual COMPare. The program was written in the 91-92
    timeframe and is Copyrighted by Whitney Software, Inc.

    If you'd like to try it out hop on your web browser and head to
    http://www.acs.oakland.edu:80/oak/.  Select "Virtual Software Library
    front desk at the OAK Repository ". Once there under "search Options"
    select "Quick search:". Leave the categories set at "MS-Windows (All)"
    and enter the search words "visual" and "compare". That search will
    return one file - VC152.ZIP. That's what you're looking for!

    Hope this helps.

    THANKS!!

2961.7..for $30 this better be good!fievel.shr.dec.com::FILGATEBruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452Wed Apr 02 1997 12:4910
 I located the program and stuffed it into the software archive
 on my workstation from where it will get indexed into the
 corporate data base (tonight?). At moment the vc152.zip and the
 extracted documentation, vc152.txt are in \\fievel\pc-sw in
 \incoming

 The license fee for this is $30,

2961.8Yucko! A face only a Unix programmer could love!WRKSYS::TATOSIANThe Compleat TanglerWed Apr 02 1997 16:346
    imnsho, it ain't even worth the disk space, never mind the $30.

    I've been using WinFC for at a couple of years. Makes "VC152" look
    primative to say the least. Can't remember where I found it though...

2961.9Expending just a little additional effort...WKOL10::STETSONThink Digital Software!Fri Apr 04 1997 13:0521
    re: .8

    Dave,

    You might have tried the instructions I provided to find VC152 to find
    WINFC. I did and if you will follow those instructions and substitute
    "WINFC" as the search string like magic up pops WINFC10B.ZIP.

    You're correct that it is a nice app in the Windows environment. And
    yes, if I'm in that situation in the future I probably will consider
    WINFC a viable alternative.

    You must never have been blessed by the situation where Windows or
    Windows 95 would not boot and you needed a tool to find the differences
    in a number of BAT files. "Been there - done that!"

    Me, I'll keep both tools in the tool box.

    THANKS!!

2961.10You're Welcome - I thinkWRKSYS::TATOSIANThe Compleat TanglerSat Apr 05 1997 02:3817
    re: .9

    So sorry - I didn't notice the criteria included DOS-only mode. I use
    FC for that on the extremely rare event that I can't get a gui up and
    the problem doesn't simply leap off the DOS SEDT session...

    And *I* didn't need to find WINFC - I already have it. On the other
    hand, I could have hit NEXT UNSEEN on this thread - and left you
    suffering with VC ;^)

    Cheers
