2951.0. "DOS 6.2 MEMMAKER fails" by KEEF::PETERS () Fri Mar 14 1997 08:05

    Why would MEMMAKER give up with a message saying it is unable to
    continue after the first reboot?

    No, it's not a riddle. A friend of mine has an old 486-33 PC which she
    has asked me to tune. One of the first things I checked was high
    memory usage. Nothing is loaded into high memory, and base memory is
    down to about 400Kb.

    I could post the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, but I thought I'd ask the
    question first.

    Thanks for any help

    re: KEEF::PETERS

    MEMMAKER is probably being too aggressive. You will likely have to
    manually put in some EXCLUDED regions to help MEMMAKER along.

    Thanks Bill,

    At the moment the CONFIG.SYS starts with the following lines:

    DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-F7FF

    That looks like a big excluded region to start with. I'll try to find
    out why they are using that range, and also try to make MEMMAKER less
    aggressive.

    Cheers

    At least it excludes the video RAM and BIOS area. There might be some
    memory left in between. Best is to REM out that line and run MSD
    (Microsoft Diagnostic) to find out which areas are occupied by BIOSes
    and video RAM. Then fine tune the EMM386 line.

    That just about excludes all of upper memory, except for 32K where
    there may be some SYSTEM ROM. I agree with .3 regarding removal of the
    EXCLUDE and giving MEMMAKER something to work with.

    Cheers,

2951.5What is the DEC FR-PCX version model for a DEC VRC21-KA?fievel.shr.dec.com::FILGATEBruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452Sat Mar 15 1997 18:548
 After rebuilding the system disk, I went to reset the monitor, but the
 Matrox setup does not have any VRC models listed. At the moment it
 it set up as a Sony Multiscan 20se. While the wire mesh in the tube
 mask is Sony-like, it does not look as good as a Sony, perhaps
 some Diamondtron model?

    I did some tuning on a Packard Bell and found that I
    had to rem out the plug and play portion in config.sys
    otherwise memmaker would fail on reboot.

2951.7It's getting betterKEEF::PETERSTue Mar 25 1997 13:306
    Well, I did manage to trim down the excluded area, and MEMMAKER
    completed. It didn't get everything into HIMEM, although in theory
    there is space, so I guess more fine tuning is necessary. At least we
    have progress. Thanks for all your tips.
