2997.0. ""operating system not found" Missing partition." by SNOFS2::JEYACHANDRAN () Thu Apr 24 1997 10:55

	I tried to run "setup" for Sophos Sweep from our Server at
	Sydney. It gave an error message (I did not bother to write it down as
	it seemed normal Windows error message which shuts the application).

	The computer (Pentium running Windows 95 with Multibooot for NT)
	froze for a while & when I shut the application (Ctrl + Alt + del),
	it rebooted.

	After the reboot, I got the message "Operating system not found"
	message. I booted from Windows 95 startup disk. Fdisk/status showed
	that the original boot disk C (IDE drive) was drive 1 but did not have
	a drive assignment, but the original SCSI disks D & E were showing as
	drives C & D respectively (disk 2 & 3). Disk 1 showed the full
	814 M Bytes as free & usage % blank.

	If I do an fdisk & use option 4 to show the partition info for current
	disk 1, it comes up with "no Partition defined" msg.

	I did not want to define a Primary DOS partition on disk 1 as this
	would clobber all my data on my boot disk.

	Is there any utility on the WEB I can use which will create a Primary
	DOS Partition, and still recover my data?

Thanks in advance.

Daniel.

2997.1Norton Util EMERGENCY RESCUE?JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecThu Apr 24 1997 14:578
    I would guess that the reason you were loading SWEEP was due to a
    possible Virus. Your symptoms sure sound like a virus did it's deed.

    You might ne able to find help by getting a full NORTON UTILITIES for
    W95 kit and follow their emergency instructions. I'm not even sure if
    that is enough in your case, but it's possible.

2997.2Norton Should Do ItSMURF::HASKELLGuerrilla EngineerThu Apr 24 1997 16:052
    The Norton Utilities should do it for you. They do perform this
    task for Windows 3.11. They did for me.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.

In fact I did not have any Virus at all. I was trying to be pro-active
trying to install the automatic monthly update feature of our server.

Once I recover (Sigh! If I recover!), I shall try & the same procedure.
If it does the same thing, then I know that the automatic set up Program
may be the culprit!

Daniel.
