2965.0. "Inkjet ink differences?" by HGOM11::LAWRENCE () Thu Mar 27 1997 01:20

I am curious to find out:

What is difference between Cannon inkjet cartridge and HP inkjet
cartridge (and also the other brands) as far as the ink is concerned.
What are the consequences if I somehow swap the ink inside?

Even HP offers different ink cartiridges, what is the difference among
the ink in the different cartridges from the same manufacturer?

I was rather wordless when someone throw this question on me. I could
say a lot like clogging, leaking etc, but none has sufficient
documentation support. Any clever guys here?

The ink formulations are different - different pigment types, different
solvents, different flow characteristics - swapping ink can give poor
results or even clog the printhead.

2965.2Refill kits?ICARUS::tavo.ogo.dec.com::DiazOctavioThu Mar 27 1997 17:428
In a somewhat related topic...

Any comments on the catridge refill kits that are been sold now?

If they work I can save about 75% of cost,e.g. $25 per new cartridge vs $5
for refill kit.

I used a noname refill kit for my Canon BJC-610. Besides the "truthful"
remarks that THIS kit won't color your fingers (they just became
black) I have found no problems so far.

I've used two different refill types for the black cartridge of my HP Deskjet
660C and not noticed any problems with printing.

However, if you do have a problem, you have no realistic means of redress
unless the ink supplier specifically warrants it'll work with your printer.
The printer manufacturer will disown it because they want the refill business
for themselves.

I am thinking of trying a refill kit for the Canon BC-02 ink cartridge.
Are these kits available at local stores? I also came across this
    offer on the web...

    	** Canon **
    BC-01, BC-02, BX-1, BX-2
    $19.95 + $4.00 S&H (10 Refills)

Refill kits are available at CompUSA, etc., and at PC shows. I've never
used one.

I have used a refill kit for the BC-02 once. It was the bottle of ink
type that you refill the BC-02 with. I will not do that again, the ink
was not as dark as the real deal and the Cannon BC-02 printhead died
halfway thru the second refill (one bottle was enough for two refills).

I have been having great success with the refillable printhead/tank
combo. I don't recall the brand name, but it is sold by COMPUSA. It was
~$45 and included a refillable prinhead and 3 snap on ink tanks.
The refillable printhead is supposed to be good for ~10 refill tanks.
The refill tanks are priced around $14 each, if I recall correctly.

Ask about this type at your internet sources, it may have been made by
Fullmark (sp?). You might also call MEI at 800-634-3478. MEI has a lot
of OEM ink and different types of refill ink and kits.

I use refill kits for the blank ink on my BJC-610. All the local stores
do have this kit which includes a small device to push the pin ball
into the cartidge and new ones to close the hole after the refill.
The description claims you can do this without getting black...HAHA!
It's mostly a mess so I do it over the kitchen sink. In most cases I
have difficulties to convince the printer that the cartridge is no
longer empty. The filling created quite some bubbles in the cartridge.
After a couple of head cleaning actions the printer finally accepts.

For the two reasons above I always keep a genuine black ink cartridge
around...just in case. I'm not sure whether or not the $$$ pay of the
    extra nerves I need.

Owning a Conon 600e I find the ink cartridges expensive.

I bought an INKUBE which contains enough ink for about 20 refills.

I drilled holes in the top of the cartridges, fill them with the
needle provided, and seal with a self tapping screw and rubber washer.

Fast refills, little mess (after a bit of practice) and cheap.

My experience with a Canon BC01 cartridge refil, was that during the lifetime of the first refill, the print
quality began to go bad. It was as if the dots weren't quite correctly aligned on the paper, resulting in
characters which were distorted. I thought it was the actual printer mechanism which was going bad, but when I
eventually replaced the catridge with a new canon one, it all worked perfectly again. I did try refilling another
cartridge with the same effect. I decided it wasn't worth it, and have used new cartridges ever since.

Called CompUSA regarding .7s printhead/tank combos. The guy did not
have a clue. Do you recall the name of the product?

Now, there's a generally applicable statement if ever I've heard one.
