This past weekend I left my PC doing backup while I went out for
the morning. All went OK and when I came home, I shutdown my PC
    and then went out again.

I was talking to my folks in FLA monday night and they told me
that they called me a few times and my computer answered.

I've gone into setup to check and can't find an ANSWER/NOANSWER
    box. How can I disable this ? (It's a hayes-compatible generic modem)

I'll check my modem-specific manual but I thought it would
    be WINDOWS95 selectable.

    Any ideas ?

nope. It is the modem answering.

AT S0=0 should do the trick.
I don't remember if you need to do something to store that.

Another thing to check is any applications that use the modem.
They often do an AT setup string before dialing. They may turn
    auto-answer back on.
