2939.0. "Celebris XL CPU Upgrades" by DABEAN::B_ROSE () Mon Mar 03 1997 16:49

    I had tried to upgrade a Celebris XL590 to a n XL5150 (using a 150M
    Intel upgrade chip). When I did this the system came up as an XL5120. I
    know I am missing something for when I tried the same with two XL5100s
    trying to make them XL5166 (166M chips) they came up as 133s. None of
    the systems lasted long as they crashed shortly after entering NT. I
    have tried to look for "the" jumper with no luck at all.

    I would appreciate your help in getting me going.

    Thanks

    Bruce

2939.1BIOS rev?HELIX::WELLCOMESteve Wellcome SHR3-1/C22 Pole A22Mon Mar 03 1997 17:573
    What's your BIOS revision level? The Celebris XL 590 is up to 2.04,
    I believe.

2939.2LEFTY::CWILLIAMSCD or not CD, that's the questionMon Mar 03 1997 19:4017
    Are these Overdrive chips or standard CPU's?

    If Overdrives, you need to upgrade the system BIOS, and they should
    report and work properly - it's a no jumper, plug in upgrade.

    If standard CPU's, you need the new BIOS, plus a new CPU daughter card-
    the one you have probably does not have the jumpers to set up the CPU
    internal clock multiplier for 150/166 Mhz. The Celebris XL590 that I have
    here did not have one of the 2 required jumpers - upgrading was the
    only choice (other than adding wires to the old board!).

    There are 3 jumoers involved - 2 for CPU clock multiplier, 1 for bus
    speed. THe clock multiplier has to be set for 1:2.5 for both 150 and
    166 Mhz parts.

2939.3I'll try thatDABEAN::B_ROSETue Mar 04 1997 13:014
    Thanks to both ... I will need to schedule downtime and then try your
    suggestions. I will be back whichever way it goes.

2939.4QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centTue Mar 04 1997 13:056
I know that my Celebris FP590, when upgraded with a 166MHz OverDrive chip,
reports the speed as 120MHz in the BIOS report. But it really does seem to
be running at 166, based on tests. (On the other hand, my HiNote VP535
sometimes says it has a P166 in the BIOS report, rather than the correct 133.)

    After doing the BIOS upgrade my system saw the 166 and we now have an
    XL 5166. I thank you all.

    We do have an NT server that crashes and we had to pull the 166
    upgrade, but we think this is the version of NT we're using.

    Thanks
