2925.0. "Info on NCR8100S" by ICS::CHRISBELL () Tue Feb 18 1997 22:14

    I have a NCR PCI to S.E. SCSI Adpater, NCR8100S. I was wondering if
    this controller would work in a Venturis PC I have so I can add a
    storage expansion box to it. Do I need any special drivers for it and
    if I do where would I get them? I've searched this notesfile and the
    DECSTATION notes file and I can't see anyhing for the NCR8100S.

    Thanx,

    Chris.....

    NCR chips were taken over by Symbios Logic. I don't know the 8100S -
    there is a 53C810 (often just called 810) which is quite common. Maybe
    you can find drivers at www.symbios.com.

    Thanx, Jim.... I went to the web site and I think I got the right
    ones. I'll try these and see if they work.

    Thanx again,

    I think the 8100s is just an NCR810 on a board...

    If so, both Win95 and NT support it with no added drivers.
    You'll need drivers for Win3.1, though.

    After checking in the lab... This is just an NCR810 on a board.
    No drivers required for NT/Win95... though you can get updated drivers
    from Symbios.

    I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but from all the info it sounds
    like I shouldn't have any problems. I'm waiting to get a storage
    cabinet.

    re: .4 Sorry about that, I don't know where I came up with "Jim"???

2925.9Doesn't see devices.ICS::CHRISBELLSat Mar 01 1997 14:058
    Ok, Ihave installed the NCR 810 and Win 95 knows about it. Now I am
    trying to add a RZ28 drive. How do I make it see the drive? I also
    have a TLZ06 tape drive I have connected to the card also, and it
    doesn't see that either. Do both of these devices need drivers?

    Thanx,

    Chris.....

    Does Fdisk see the disk?

    It needs to be both Fdisk'd and formatted before you will see it.
    Also, the drive has to be set to spin up on power up. RZ28's are not
    set that way by default - you'll have to add a jumper.

    Look in SSAG::ASK_SSAG for jumper settings.

    The TLZ06 needs a backup program with drivers to run under '95.
    dir/title=backup here and in the WINDOWS95 notes file for your options.
    I'm using Seagate Backup (~$70) - there are many others out there that
    work as well or better. Depends who you ask.

    No fdisk disn't see it either. Doesn't it have to be assigned a drive
    letter first in order for fdisk to work?

    I'll look for the jumper setting, thats probably it. I know I didn't
    set any jumpers on it.

    FDISK goes by hard drives and not by logical drives with drive letters.
    Does the NCR BIOS list all the devices during boot? In a worst case you
    might have to use the SCSI disk formatter which comes with the NCR SCSI
    (kit is called ProSCSI). The formatter needs to be run from DOS.

2925.13Works OK now!ICS::CHRISBELLWed Mar 05 1997 16:138
    Got it to work. I ENABLED the treminators to take the TLZ06 out of the
    picture and now it sees the RZ28. I have to load NT onto the RZ28, and
    than I'll try to set up the TLZ06 to be seen by NT...

    Thanx for the info.
