2900.0. "Creating bootable DOS with network??" by BHAJEE::JAERVINEN (Ora, the Old Rural Amateur) Fri Jan 31 1997 10:57

    I couldn't think of another conference to put this in... the question
    may be stupid, but please bear with me - my'professional' PC career
    began with Windows NT in '92, I've never had anything to do with DOS
    networking.

    I need to create a bootable floppy (MS-DOS or Win95) that has enough
    networking stuff to be able to connect to a share on an NT server
    (NETBeui preferred, TCP/IP is also ok). I know I need a redirector,
    driver, utilities, etc. but where do I get them? (I could take a
    Pathworks client I guess, but I understand it's only DECnet and/or
    TCP/IP and I'd prefer NETBeui).

    I have the developers library, but as far as I can see, the "16-bit
    operating systems" disk only has DOS 6.22 and various Windows variants
    but no DOS networking S/W.

    What's the easiest and quickest way to create one?

2900.1Somewhere on ftp.microsoft.com...SUBSYS::WARKFri Jan 31 1997 12:0113
	Okay... For the network redirector, etc Microsoft has the bits on ftp.microsoft.com...
You want the stuff from /bussys/clients and I think it was the MSCLIENT pieces I used, but may
have been lanman...

	The drivers you may need to get from the network board vendor (I'm sure you already
realized that)... I don't remember what, if any. board drivers came with the lanman clients..

	At one time I had a bootable floppy with the Lantastic redirector and the FastBack+
backup code, since Fastback supported SCSI tapes over a network... I don't remember if I
managed to get the Microsoft bits all on one floppy... I'm pretty sure I did...

    re .1: Thanks, I'll have a look.

    The network cards are ours (for the time being) and I know where to
    find the drivers.

Check Programs\Administrative Tools\Network Client Administrator
on an NT Server for a tool to create a network boot disk.

    I've been using mswgcn.exe that I found somewhere at the MS web site.

2900.5I'm using a SN2000 (cheapo card - $25 from a comp show)PTOSS1::MATSCHERZFri Jan 31 1997 15:5415
    I did it via the NT3.51 client disks. This is a couple of disks that
    you can install to a hard drive and then copy the necessary files to a
    3.5 floppy (i've got about 45k free on it now). If you just need to do
    this with a dec net card then the drivers are right on the disks . If
    you need to do this with another vendors card it's a little more work
    but you just have to copy over a driver for the lan driver to the
    floppy.
      Mine works pretty good. Boot the floppy with the netcard in place,
    copy all the install files for windows or whatever and just pop out the
    net card and the floppy and install. Works great !

    I used to use PATHWORKS for this, did it all automatically from the
    setup program.

2900.7Pathworks no longer works...fievel.shr.dec.com::FILGATEBruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452Fri Jan 31 1997 17:253
 the old pathworks does not support long file names and the new pathworks
 won't come close to fitting on a floppy.

    Thanks for all the good advice... it's almost Friday midnight here so
    I'll try it all out on Monday.

    I just neet a bootable net-able system which _has_ to fit on one 3.5"
    floppy.
