2664.12New hard drive installation problemVMSSG::FRIEDRICHSAsk me about Young EaglesMon Jan 27 1997 13:1126
Similar situation to the base note....

Asus motherboard, supports 4 hard drives via 2 IDE cables. I want to
    attach 3 drives:

    		1.6gb Caviar (western digital)
    		Mitsumi 12x CD rom
    		540mb Maxtor

The problem is, I can only get the system to see 2 disks, not all
3! I have tried a variety of combinations of primary master/slave
and secondary master/slave. I have swapped cables and where on
    the MB they are connected.

Both hard disks are formated, and I can boot from either one.

I have checked the jumper on the MB to allow 4 hard drives.

I even pulled out the sound board to make sure it was not causing an
    IDE address conflict.

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!
    jeff

    Re .12:

When you say the system "won't see" all 3 drives, do you mean via
BIOS Setup? IDE CD-ROM drives never appear in Award or AMI BIOS
Setup; at least, not in the recent ones I've used.

Set up the WD as the master on IDE0, the Maxtor as the slave on
IDE0, and the CD-ROM as either master or slave on IDE1.

I agree that the BIOS setup screens will not show the CD-ROM. However,
there is a screen displayed just before MSDOS startup that shows the
configuration and shows what drives are configured. This screen does
    display the CD-ROM.

I have tried the combination that you suggest. The CD-ROM does not
show up in the display, nor is it found during any of the startup.

My other guess is that the secondary IDE is somehow still turned off, but
I can't figure out how. The jumper is correct and I can't find
anything in the BIOS.. (Award, 9/26)

    Thanks,
    jeff

If you can boot from either drive, that must mean that each one has an
active partition. Boot from floppy and change the "slave" disk to not
have an active partition and see if that help.s

Which disk is it you don't "see"? Under DOS/Win 3.1/ Win 95?
    Always the CD?

If not Win 95 you need a driver for the CD.

    Re .14:

Award does have an "enable second IDE channel" option - I believe
under "chipset features". A quick check is to put one of the IDE
drives on IDE 0 as master, and the other on IDE 1 as master - see
if both are accessible. If so, it's not the channel being disabled
    via BIOS.

Are you running Windows 95 or 3.x? 95 *should* see the CD without
a special driver; 3.x will need a driver loaded in CONFIG.SYS.

Feel free to swing by 4x35 if you want to chat - I owe you one for
my kids getting an airplane ride from the Young Eagles program.

I have a similar set of hardware - 2 Western Digital drives, a Mitsumi
12x CD-ROM, Intel Triton II HX chipset with 2 EIDE channels, and Award
BIOS. I don't recall having had a problem with detection of the devices
except when I had the IDE connector in incompletely or backwards on the
CD-ROM drive, so I suppose that's one thing you might check. If it's
the same unit, pin1/cable stripe is next to the power connector, on the
right when looking at the back.

I had operational problems when the CD-ROM was the master or only
device on the second IDE channel. I've had better results with the 2
Western Digital drives as masters and the CD-ROM as a slave on the
second channel. All 3 do show up on the initial "inventory" screen.
However, my Linux boot seems to have problems detecting the IRQ on the
secondary channel and refuses to enable DMA on it, so something may
    still not be entirely kosher.

In my BIOS setup, I have drive type "auto" for all 3 and I have
disabled the empty IDE slot (slave on the first channel). On the
PnP/PCI screen, I have "PCI-AUTO" for "PCI IDE IRQ Map to". On the
"Integrated Periherals screen", I have HDD block mode and On-chip 2nd
    IDE channel enabled. I can't look right now ( :-) ), but I think I have
"PCI slot 2nd IDE channel" disabled. IDE Primary/Secondary Master and
slave PIO settings are both "auto".

    Thanks everyone for your help...

As I suspected, I missed one line in the "Chipset Features" menu...
Even though all 4 drives were set up as "AUTO", there was an additional
line of "Onboard PCI IDE Enable" which I needed to change to "BOTH"
    from "Primary".

I am now able to see all 3 drives..

    Thanks!

2664.20RZ29 in PCXL ??REDZIN::COXThu Feb 20 1997 17:437
I have a PCXL 466d, on-board SCSI, 1/2G Hard Drive. I am trying to add an RZ29
(4 Gb). When I FDISK, all I can do is set up a Primary with a maximum 1G. I
can format and the disk behaves properly, just at 1/4 of its capacity.

I must be missing something. Or am I stuck with 1G maximum per drive?

Sounds like you have to enable SCSI controller support for >1 gig drives.
That is done in the SCSI BIOS (Ctrl-A as the card BIOS loads on an
    Adaptec).
