    Can someone explain how you know wether you can use bus mastering
    drivers or not?

    Windows95 has 'standard bus mastering drivers' available, and according
    to the tests, my hard drive will support bus mastering, but can/how do
    I install the Win95 drivers?

    I want to try this on a noname clone at home and a HiNote Ultra.

2276.12Here is a good site for BusMastering DriversNWD002::SKRABUT_LALarry SkrabutSat May 03 1997 21:4920
    	   Try looking at this site about BusMastering drivers:

    http://www.dallas.net/~ksm/software.htm

    I have used and still am using Intel version v3.00. They advise not to
    use this on a laptop though and it seem that it is picky about what
    drive is in use. Via WinTune 95, on a P133 with 48mb, ASUS P55T2P4 V2.1
    Bios 2.02 (Found on FTP site only) WDC 31600 drives, I am getting 22-23
    mb cached and uncached speed. Before 3.1mb uncached and 14mb cached.
    My speed has gone down now to 19-20mb and I think it is because of
    Norton A.V., I haven't T/S the reason due to time (or lack of it and
    lasyness).

    The new drivers are much easier to install than the older drivers.
    Have a bootable floppy on hand before trying the install and a good
    backup before doing anything. PLEASE READ THE README COMPLETELY BEFORE
    DOING ANYTHING. One can lose the system disk if one is not careful!!

    Good luck, I have been using them since Jan 96.
2276.13Win95B + Trione Drivers == BAD!KAOFS::LOCKYERPCs & Religion - Both Just Faith, NOT Fact!Tue May 06 1997 00:2116
    I put together a P5200MMX clone system with a GigaByte MB this past
    weekend and played (very briefly!) with the Trione drivers that came
    with the MB. Everything run fine until I installed these drivers...

    The system would boot fine, but would hang often - can't be sure if it
    was while accessing the HD or the CD, but the system would just stop
    responding and the only way out was to reboot. Along the way, I saw a
    message saying that using these drivers would actually slow the system
    down.

    Anyway, I removed the drivers by reinstalling Win95 and it's not hung
    since. While poking around on the WWW I came across a document that
    says one of the features of Win95B (OSR2) is improved IDE bus
    mastering. Putting it all together, perhaps improperly, I conclude
    that Win95B includes the features of these drivers and installing them
    on Win95B is not a good thing!

    	Question: what make of disk drive(s) where you using and what was
    the BIOS settings on the EIDE controller? Just wondering, the latest
    BMIDE driver was released this month (May 97) and OSR 2 was released in
    Sept 96. I have heard about a OSR2.1 but I don't know anything about
    the release date and differents between the two. Trione drivers are
    different than BMIDE (Intel) drivers.

    I wrote my previous from memory - pretty sure the diskette said Trione
    IDE Bus Mastering Drivers. I'll check tonight....
2276.16KAOFS::LOCKYERPCs & Religion - Both Just Faith, NOT Fact!Wed May 07 1997 04:248
    The label on the diskette says:

    INTEL PCI IDE DRIVER
    Triones Bus Master ATAPI Driver Ver. 3.22A
    And then it lists several O/Ss including WIN 95

    All I know is that with driver installed my system hangs!

    	The drivers I use are the BmIDE drivers from the web page from
    reply 12. I am traveling this week and next an not able to check on my
    system for more info. The latest BmIDE drivers are v3.0 but v2.85 are
    also posted on that page. The Trione drivers are also there but there
    are warning to the affect they are for certain manufacture of boards.
