    Quick question on adding a 2nd EIDE/ATA drive.  I've got a Tyan Titan
    III MB which has 2 EIDE ports on it.  On one port I've got a Seagate
    Medalist 1.6G HDD (Fast ATA-2, motherboard bios set to LBA mode).  In
    the other port is a 6X CD ROM.
    
    I want to add a 2nd HDD.  Any concerns/gotchas?  I read a few notes
    back about possible incompatibilities between EIDE and Fast ATA-2, but
    it didn't seem to be a problem.  Any old EIDE drive will do?  Or should
    I be sticking with another Seagate?

    "Fast ATA-2" is a Seagate term, EIDE is a Western Digital term. It
    seems that in practice, the two are interchangeable...
    
    That said, the odds certainly improve if you stick with the same
    manufacture when it comes to daisy chaining IDE drives together (with
    the noted exception of Conner - but I guess that isn't a problem
    anymore). Still, *most* EIDE drives will work fine together, and if
    your bios is smart enough it can even handle the differences between
    running one drive in PIO Mode 3 verses the other one in PIO Mode 4.
    
    If you have any trepidation, make sure that you can exchange whatever
    drive you start with without taking a financial penalty (read:
    restocking charge) if you do run into some obscure problem...

    Why the mention of Conner?  I ask because I think that the Seagate
    Medalist series are actually Conner disks that became Seagate Disks
    when Seagate sucked them up.

    A few years back, there were problems with mixing Conner drives with
    computers.  My opinion, at least.

    Yup - I was making a true (if cheap) shot at Conner: the worst was that 
    there were problems mixing Conner drive with Conner drives!

    
    I have a Tyan Titan III and the Award BIOS is smart enough to allow
    mixed PIO/DMA modes on the same bus.  This means that you can add it to
    either EIDE port without a performance penalty.
