    That is a standard DECdirect part number. It adds a AMD 586/133 with
    special universal jumpers and a regulator to the socket.

    Just call DECdirect!

    Have you tried to order this part? I called DecDirect and they
    funnelled me to PCS Compleat. The folks at PCS Compleat claimed they
    did not have the part and funnelled me to the tech support team who
    promptly sent me into voice mail since they had no one available.

521.218Viewsonic G810 21" mointor $1499PCBUOA::KRATZMon Mar 17 1997 14:5612
    CompUSA has the ViewSonic 21" G810 for $1499 (16x12@71Hz max,
    higher refreshes at lower res'es of course; 0.25 pitch)

    You don't run across the combination of a
     * good 21" monitor
     * reasonably priced
     * and at a local retail store where you should be able to convince
       them to hook up a boxed unit so you can inspect it before plunking
       down the bucks. (I'm kind of a luck-of-the-draw believer when it
       comes to monitor quality)
    very often.

    I just bought (from CompUSA) the Hitachi 21" monitor, with a .22 dot
    pitch, for around $1420 using the Digital discount. It's _very_
    nice; seemed brighter than the Viewsonic in the store (but they were
    running everything at 56Hz and 800x600 so everything looked
    uniformly awful).

    Also nice for cookouts ... oops, that's the hibachi. Get 'em
    confused sometimes.

    For the life of me, I can't understand why these stores demo 21" (or
    even 17") monitors at 800x600.
521.222QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centMon Mar 17 1997 18:294
Because the PCs they have them connected to don't have enough video memory
for higher resolution at a decent color depth?

    Not to mention that the crummy multi-drop distribution system they use
    will completely croak when the dot-clock goes much faster than
    800x600xsomething_really_slow...
521.224BULEAN::BANKSSaturn SapTue Mar 18 1997 11:167
    But, often they demo systems that DO have enough video memory to at
    least give us an impression of what it's like. And, often, they're
    connected to a single PeeCee. I know this because often, I will change
    the resolution on the display system so I can see what it looks like.

    In the case of one NEC 21" I saw the other day, I now understand why
    the store had it set to 800x600.

If you don't have the $1400.00 to put out and want to stay with 17", the
CompUSA price on the Viewsonic 17GS is 3.00 over the best mail order price I
saw (not including shipping). $602.27. The sticker price was $649.

It has 16" viewable, 1280x1024@65hz (.27 pitch).

521.227P-166 chips are now $100. Perhaps a year stopgap?JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecMon Jun 02 1997 18:1715
    If you are considering a little Pentium Upgrade, you *might* want to
    consider the new AMD K5-166 chip which can be found for $99-$103 right
    now. (www.pricewatch.com and other mailorder places). It is pin-for-pin
    compatible and according to www.amd.com, should drop into most any
    motherboard with a BIOS date after March96. Most current BIOS identify
    it correctly, but even the older ones will see it as an Intel P166.
    AMD states performance under W95 and WNT slight better than the Intel
    part.

    I make note since the classic Pentium-166 is still $250, The Intel
    166-MMX is $325 and the AMD K6-166-MMX is almost $300. Looks like a
    nice way to supercharge existing P90/P100 machines cheaply until the
    dust settles later this year with AMD K6-266, CYRIX M2, MMX-II, etc.
